Anyone regret how much they spent on honeymoon??

I know many people have regrets about how much they spent on their wedding, going over budget, and wishing they had that for other most lasting purposes... But what about the $$ spent on the honeymoon? My F and I are thinking about going to South Africa for honeymoon and it's costing a pretty penny... After such an expensive wedding, it's hard to swallow but then we think this is the only time we'd probably be able to take this trip - before kids, house, etc.

Thoughts??

We weren't initially even going to have a honeymoon because it is out of our budget. BUT, it is a vacation, really. It has nothing to do with the wedding. It will be wonderful to get away with my husband and to have a weeks to relax, and talk about what an experience it was and how omg.. WE'RE MARRIED! i think it's worth it. maybe plan a less expensive trip if the numbers are freaking you out. We're going to cancun for a week, all inclusive and for less than 3 grand for everything!

Good question. You definitely need to factor the timing into the cost. As you said, you want to go but won't be able to once you two start settling down. If it's high on your list, go for it! You won't be able to several years down the road. I'm super cheap with spending money on vacations but when FH spent 2 weeks in France for work we decided to take an extra week and fly me out there. We spent around $3-4k for that week and the idea of that before we went killed me. But now I am really happy that we went because you can exactly take a newborn to Paris for a week with 2 months of planning!

I think vacations are always worth the cost! They're memories and adventures that will last a lifetime!

I wish we had spent more on our honeymoon! We went to Disney World and I really wanted to do the Disney Cruise land and sea (half the week on a cruise and half the week at Disney World) but DH wasn't on board with that so we just did Disney World. (I loved it but feel the land and sea would have been more enjoyable).

Definitely not. It's the part I'm most excited about!

We're doing a mini-moon right after the wedding (road trip from New Orleans to Dallas) that is going to cost about $3000 total, then in December we're going to Bali for two weeks which will be about $5000 total. We travel a lot so spending $$ on vacations is pretty normal for us.

But South Africa is another story! I've heard how insanely expensive it can be. If it was $10,000 or more I'd definitely be having some sticker shock.

Thanks for feedback guys... I am definitely having sticker shock. While my parents helped us out with an exorbitant wedding, the honeymoon is about $10K-$12K ($4K of which is just flights) for 2.5 weeks - Cape Town, safari, etc. I know it'll be memorable for sure, but just getting so so antsy about feeling like it's not "wise".

We're right there with you with the insane cost of our honeymoon! So far, we've spent …too much… on flights alone for a week in Iceland and a week in Greenland… YIKES. We're usually total budget backpackers, so this is keeping me up every night, haha BUT this trip was just so high up on our list, we couldn't resist kicking off our married life with a bang. It's been super motivational and getting us through our countdown to the wedding, and I don't think we are going to regret the experience at all. Live it up now while you can! You've got the rest of your life to earn the money again but you never know when the opportunity to escape like this again will come.

We spent almost as much money for our honeymoon as we did for the entire wedding, and it was worth every penny. With DH's schedule, its hard for him to get away for anything longer than a 3 day weekend. So when he was able to take time off for the wedding, we decided to take advantage of it and do a great trip before he had to return to work. We live 10 minutes from one of the top 10 beaches in the world with maybe 2 months of winter weather a year, we spent our honeymoon in the snow at a resort in Jackson Hole Wyoming which is right outside of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Since we are both Photography nuts, it was an unforgettable trip. And with everything we did, we never ran into another newlywed couple. So if you can find a way to go somewhere, its a great way to start off your new life together. Good luck and Best wishes !!!!!!!

I don't think money spent on the honeymoon or vacation in general is ever a waste. After all, aren't those among the best experiences in your life? We all work so hard that we deserve to spoil ourselves every now and then!

You're gonna have once in a lifetime experiences on your honeymoon, don't feel guilty! We're also spending a pretty penny on ours, splurging on things, because when do you do this sort of thing if NOT on your honeymoon?

I wish we didn't have to spend so much on a nice honeymoon, but I totally agree with your opinion that it's last really big trip before kids and buying a house (at least for FH and me). When I read that women on here spent like $7000 on a honeymoon because they wanted deluxe everything, my jaw drops. I'm complaining about spending $3000! I definitely don't think the honeymoon is a waste. I'm extremely excited to have one last "hoorah" with FH before we decide to make the decision to settle down.

My husband and I went on a pretty expensive honeymoon to Disney World. It costed about $1000 more than I thought it would, and that's not including all the money we spend on food and souveniers there.

But I don't regret it one bit. It was our honeymoon and we were able to afford it. We enjoyed it so much we want to go back again asap.

The one thing I'm willing to max my credit card out for is the honeymoon. We haven't gone on a real vacation in over a year, and won't for another year from this point. We will need it. Won't regret the 3K for the cruise, let alone the thousand spent on the boat.

I don't regret our honeymoon cost one bit. We've never taken a huge vacation alone together and who knows when we will be able to again. It'll be so nice to relax and enjoy each other. Every penny is worth it.

You don't know if you'll regret spending the money or not. But if you do, money is a renewable source. It isn't easy, but you can get it back. You will never get time back. You'll never be as young as you are now. If you regret the money loss, you can make it back. If you regret not going, you can't get your honeymoon back. I say go for it.

It is expensive, but at the same time that's a huge life experience. Do you have family or friends in SA? If not, I've been a couple of times and would be happy to connect to give a few recommendations Smiley smile.

edit to add: SA is expensive to get there are the expeditions; but once you are there it is actually fairly cheap! You can get hotels for a decent rate and the food is incredibly good value. As in, you can get a good bottle of wine AT A RESTAURANT for $12-18 USD- - not just for a glass, for the whole bottle!

There is nothing wrong with spending money on a once in a lifetime trip (unless you spend exhorbinant amounts of money on everything and can't afford it.) I love vacations, it's always been the thing I will sacrifice for. Thinking of all of my "once in a lifetime" trips, (why have just one!) Other than a souvineer or two that I'd like to renegotiate, I can't say I've regret anything.
