I used to work for an engagement ring manufacturer /designer.

Synthetic in gemology means lab grown. You use a "seed" of the natural gemstone you are trying to grow. A synthetic gemstone has the same optical, physical and chemical composition as a naturally occurring gemstone. They test the same as naturally occurring gemstones. They look perfect (unlike most naturally occurring gemstones) because they are grown in perfect conditions, as opposed to in the ground where there are many variables.

Imitation is the word gemologists use for "fake". Imitation gems are made out of glass, plastic or resin.

So moissanite is a synthetic substitute for a diamond. A CZ is an imitation substitute for a diamond.

A good CZ (there are different grades of them) optically look more like a diamond than a moissanite, but as stated above they can crack, chip or cloud fairly quickly.

Yea @LB: when someone says they want to upgrade to a "bigger diamond", that means you had a diamond to begin with. What's the deal?

I don't have a CZ but a Moissanite center diamond. The side diamonds on the engagement ring and wedding band are real.

Why not wait until you can get a bigger diamond? Why get a CZ just to have a bigger ring?

That idea seems pretty shallow to me and immature

OP - for what it's worth, I think the ring you have now IS beautiful. I personally would NEVER change or upgrade my engagement ring, I love it just the way it is. The meaning behind it is what's important to me...not what it looks like.

When I see young couples post extremely large engagement rocks my first thought is CZ. Sorry. Is that what you're asking? If people will know? Probably. Yes.

Greene- I love showing of my ring. If it was smaller or not a diamond I'd be happy because I love the meaning behind it.

FH looked into CZ before a diamond because it was cheaper. His mom told him to spend the extra and get a real diamond because this is something I'll have my whole life. I wouldn't go fake just to get a bigger ring though. I personally would rather have a smaller diamond than a huge CZ.

Synthetic does not equal fake though. Fake is like cutting glass and calling it a diamond. That's fake. It's moissanite. It's not trying to be a "fake" diamond. You're coming off offensive and a little condescending. As another poster has said, it's not an imitation, which would make it fake.

How about instead of all this shit you just appreciate the ring because it is a token of your FH's love.

Get over yourself. Stop caring what other people think and your life will be a hell of a lot easier.

Doesn't mean it is any less meaningful. But fact is fact.

I think what really matters is the commitment that is being made when two people vow their lives to each other. Not the size or price tag of the ring.

You already have a beautiful diamond...and want to change it for something cheaper that isn't as durable? Sorry - I don't care what your ring looks like, if you spent $30 on Amazon just to have the biggest CZ "rock" you could find, I won't be admiring your ring. I'll think how your FH spent time and effort looking for a beautiful diamond and you didn't want it because it wasn't big enough. I don't care how small anyone's ring is, your FH picked it out. I would never ever ever exchange out a ring that FH looked at and said "it's perfect". He bought it for you. You should learn to be appreciative.
