Anyone had a bad makeup trial?

Astina, on October 18, 2013 at 1:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

Had a horrible make up trial yesterday and now don't know what to do. I already pre-paid for a package where she does the whole wedding party's hair and makeup. I figured she was a professional but I looked like a corpse after the trial! The foundation had absolutely no coverage and did not match my skin tone - it made me look grey! I almost cried when I looked in the mirror. I would never leave my house looking like that ! She even had cheap dollarstore eyelashes (I recognized the packaging) which she charged me $10 for. Is this common? Have others had horrible experiences as-well?

Find another one. I haven't had a horrible experience, but I have had one where I just didn't like her style. I don't trust anyone that makes me buy the package before a trial either.

I had the worst trial.. twice!!! I never wear anything but eyeliner and mascara so I thought id try full on makeup, but simple... Both times, both girls did horrible jobs,, where the foundation has the line under the jaw and it was 3 shades darker than my skin tone - and im dark! So my BM did my makeup, it was light and natural.

I had that SAME experience..I looked like a corpse..but she told me after I got there that I was supposed to bring my own foundation..nobody ever told me on the phone..I never signed a contract with her, that's why I was doing the trial..she used dirty makeup brushes, she even took scissors to my eyelashes AFTER putting the falsies on. Girl don't mess with my eyelashes..I was kinda crying/tried to hide it..I feel like she stole 40 bucks from me.. and I swear my eyelashes were shorter like she had actually cut them by accident.

I ended up doing my own since I had been practicing /watching youtube tutorials for wedding/photo friendly makeup.I got a lot of compliments on it..my BM who is good at makeup helped with the eyeliner since my hands were shaking..I couldn't pay to travel back home for a ton of MUA trials..I had an appt with a different one who flaked out at the trial stage.

Can you get the money back? I wouldn't let her near me or my BM's face or hair if I were U

My first make-up trial was terrible...sounds similar to yours. I looked white white white. My second one was awesome! Get your money back and run

Looks like it's a common problem ...I paid for a package and thought the trial was just to try our different looks. I never even thought it could look bad - I figured a professional would do a great job. Well .. I guess live & learn... I just emailed her about getting my money back.

I got mine done for my engagement photos. I'm pale, like casper, and she used bronzer on me. I had an orange line on my chin. I almost didn't get a make-up artist for my wedding but I decided to trust once more. I hope I don't regret it!

Yikes. I've been on the fence about a makeup artist or doing my own, and it's stories like this that make me think I'll be doing my own.

I'm sorry you had a bad trial Smiley sad

Did your MUA work with you on it? My MUA tried a few different things with me, mostly on eyes, and we worked together to see which look I liked the best. You should have been able to tell your MUA what you thought and had her make changes on your face right there. My trial was done when we both were happy with the outcome.

I just had a bad makeup trial too. Idk what to do bc I already paid for me and my wedding party. She did my makeup on my way to my engagement photos.. after i didn't even feel like myself.. i felt like i had WAY too much make up on. It was so embarrassing, and now I'm scared it ruined my engagement pictures (we don't have them back yet). My FH said it didn't look bad, but I am nervous about my wedding now. I want to look like myself and not like im wearing a mask. I never thought it would turn out bad honestly, and she is supposed to be one of the best!

You need to be sure to express your dissatisfaction to the makeup artist. You are paying for a professional service and you should receive professional makeup. Did you get past client referrals and contact them? Not everyone with a handful of brushes and a box of makeup is a pro. I've been in this industry for 20+ years and I run in to so many artists who just don't take the time to get the training and skills they need. I hope you are able to get your money back.

My friend is a MUA, I actually did not really like the first time she gave me a trial. I looked super powdery and there was little contouring done. I later found out from her that most will purposely do not a great job so they can get feedback on what you like or not like. Do you have any faith in that MUA? If you don't find another, but if you like her, give her honest feedback and what you would want different. A good MUA who intended to get feedback will take you very seriously, a bad one will be offended. Did you end up talking to her at all? Now what products can you tell she was using? Is she endorsing a certain brand or she is being everything random that you can tell may have been from a convenience store?

The second time I did a trial, it was free and I was too dark looking. The third time really was the engagement shot and I think I may be a tad golden but we have worked out what we are using. But I feel I am more comfortable doing my own eyebrows. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I would get a new makeup artist.

I did my own makeup and it was the best decision I made. I ended up having to get my nails redone the morning of the wedding because of a crappy nail tech who initially did my nails, and because of that had my sister (a hair stylist) do my hair instead of me doing it...that didn't turn out too well and I ended up having to try to recurl massively hairsprayed hair.

If you often do full face makeup on yourself and have the time to practice and research the best products to use, consider doing your own.

Did you read reviews about this MUA before paying? Is she just starting out? Did she have before/after pictures in her portfolio?

At the makeup trial, did she insists the makeup look fine or did she ask if you wanted any changes?

Professional MUA's will work with you to get a look you want. If she 100% insists it's fine the way it is, then she probably isn't the best for your wedding. I would look into your contract to see if you can get your money back if you don't feel comfortable with her.

No, that is not normal, atleast for me. During a trial it is extremely important to communicate with the makeup artist what you like and don't like. Bringing lots of photos of looks you like also helps. During a trial I typically do more than one look transitioning from natural to more dramatic so that the bride can see the difference. Remember we are people also and can't read minds. Tell her what went wrong and see what she says! She won't take it offensively if she is a professional.

I don't charge ahead for full packages so I don't know how she will handle that. Typically a trial should be done before a package is ever booked. Did you already pay her the total amount?
