Anyone getting married in Italy? How difficult is the paperwork process?

Kristin, on June 25, 2019 at 1:22 AM Posted in Planning 0 7
FH and I booked a trip to Naples and the Amalfi coast for next May-2 months before were getting married. Because we’re having a super small wedding anyways we decided we want to secretly elope while there then do the reception and ceremony in August as planned. So the trip will be our honeymoon too. Is/has anyone planned a wedding in Italy? I briefly researched what’s needed paperwork-wise and it’s a bit confusing.

I originally wanted to do that and it was so confusing to me as well that I opted out! I didn’t wanna deal with all that so I chose elsewhere instead... sorry I don’t have any advice... good luck...

Thanks. It's SO confusing and because it's just the 2 of us going, we won't have any witnesses that we know and I don't want to get married in a church. I'm thinking now we might do a quick elopement in the states before we leave so the marriage will be legal, then have a symbolic ceremony in Italy.

Yes it seems that getting legally married in a foreign country is difficult.. México requires a blood work and all this other stuff so we are also doing a symbolic wedding there...

So then you would have an elopement in the US, a secret symbolic ceremony in Italy, and a third ceremony and a reception in the US? So three ceremonies? That seems like overkill. And you wouldn't tell anyone about the first two?

FH doesn't want to elope in the US for that reason. I'm the process of finding elopement packages in Italy and then we'll have the other ceremony and reception with our families in August. Our plan is to ask his sister to officiate our ceremony in August but if we legally get married before then then she wouldn't need to get ordained.

Oh wow that's crazy! It's so easy in the US so I just expected it to be easy every where else

Update: I've been speaking to a few officiants and wedding planners in Italy and even they suggested having a legal ceremony in the US and symbolic ceremony in Italy because of how costly and complicated the process is.
