Anyone get married by magistrate?

Tina, on March 2, 2020 at 2:52 PM Posted in Planning 1 5

My fiance and I decided to get married tomorrow by a magistrate. We will have a huge party to celebrate with family in October but wanted this part to be private and also didn't want to wait any longer. It's tomorrow and I am so anxious. How involved is this process? My cousin had a courthouse wedding in NYC in a gown, her mom and MOH in gowns, men in suits. I think for here that would be a lot - not that I would anyway. There, you do the whole "I do's" and need witnesses. Here, I've learned you don't even need witnesses. Do you say vows? Do you literally just show up, sign the paperwork in front of the judge, get their signature and leave? No words or vows exchanged? I'm sooo last minute asking, I know. I was so calm and nonchalant about it but suddenly, today, I'm so nervous. Anybody have experience?

    Hey everyone!!

So, it was very quick but it was not impersonal at all. The judge recited a super sweet and touching message to us before having us repeat vows. We were in a small courtroom with two rows of seating - maybe up to 20 or so people. I had my closest aunt, cousin and my sister there. We're both from NYC and have very, very little family living close enough to be there. I wasn't sure how it would be. Some made it seem like we literally would just sign and go. It wasn't like that at all and actually was very sweet, if not traditional or elaborate. Also, was super fast. We had brunch with family and then in the evening dinner and a movie to extend the tradition to our wedding date. Our first date was a dine-in theatre and it may sound corny but we fell in love that day and have not been apart since so every year on that month and date we would celebrate our anniversary with dinner and a movie. It was perfect. Smiley smile We are going to Jamaica next week for our honeymoon but still have a celebration with family and friends and a short blessing ceremony to plan for October so super excited to get ideas here. We totally put the cart before the horse here but I would not change it.

Thank you!!! August is sooo close, you will glad you waited I'm sure. Smiley smile I was torn about what to do, too. We just couldn't wait lol but also wanted to celebrate with our people so we just decided to do both - a courthouse wedding but also later in the year a ceremony during which a relative that is a pastor would bless our marriage under God and with fam and friends in witness and then a reception. So, yesterday, I wore a pretty, purple wrap dress and heels, straightened my normally kinky curly fro and wore some make-up. Typically, my hair is up (cuz it's cray cray) or down and wild, and at most I wear mascara and lippies. I do love fashion though, so that's where I usually express myself but for this I looked more traditional and conservative than I usually do. I'm glad I dressed up but very glad I didn't go too crazy because it really was the quickest event and I would have looked kinda of out there against the backdrop of the small, country courthouse (looked like a converted home). We both agreed the ceremony in the fall will be more traditional (except for the legal aspect), I'll wear a gown and him a tux. We'll have a bridal party, too. People are confused lol but we've always done things our own way so they aren't too surprised. lol
