Anyone ever done sclerotherapy for spider veins?

studentloansforlife, on June 3, 2016 at 10:03 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

So I am seriously considering having something done about my spider veins on my legs. I have had them since my mid twenties and recently read that they can be a side effect of long term birth control use. I have never been overweight, so I am pinning it on that.

It really makes me self conscious to wear shorts or short dresses as I have them both on the sides of my thighs and behind my knees. I can actually see them in my engagement photos despite applying tanning lotion.

I read this treatment is relatively easy and not terribly expensive and wanted to ask if anyone has ever done it or knows someone who has. Did it work? Was it worth it? Any side effects?

I did it last year on both thighs. 2 treatments and it worked well. I really need to go back and have some other areas worked on.

It wasn't bad but it takes a while to see the full effect. It gets worse for a short time and then just fades away. I had no side effects.

I did laser for mine. It was amazing to watch the veins just vanish. I was left with some welts and redness for a couple of days, and I had to wear long skirts or pants until my legs were healed because it felt like a bad sunburn. It was totally effective and worth it though. I loved the instant gratification.

Wow, that's really cool! I'm curious previous posters; is this something insurance paid for, or did you have to go totally out of pocket?

@ Dreamer -Thank you for sharing your experience!

@Under the June Willows- Wow I didn't know laser was an option too, do you mind if I ask what the cost was?

I'm actually going in a couple of weeks to get some varicose and spider veins worked on.

My mom is going through the process right now. She's so happy to be doing it but it isn't a one and done thing like she thought. She's going both full legs and it's taking her months. One thing is she wishes she did it during the winter. The place she goes to suggests keeping your legs out of direct sunlight for eight weeks after a session

As for insurance, it depends on your insurance and if the place can prove it's necessary. The place said there are certain medical conditions that causes the spiderveins. They had to do an ultra sound to see.

@Charity- it was considered cosmetic, so no. However, because it was done at a medical office (plastic surgeon's) I was reimbursed from my flexible savings account. We aren't in a very populated area, but we do have dermatologists and plastic surgeon techs (they don't have to be MDs) that do it. Lots of Medi-spa's and boutique skincare/hair removal places will do it too. I suggest a medical office, though.

@Pam- As far as cost...it was a bit steep. $500 for as many as she could get in 30 min...which was a lot more than I thought it would be. I was fortunate in that the tech that did mine loved doing it and had no other appointments the rest of the day, so she kept zapping away for 45 minutes.

I got mine at a discount through Groupon. I saw something for the laser but didn't think it would really work. Now that someone here said it does, I think I'll buy one for Groupon for the laser removal and get the rest done.

I'm a hairstylist, so I get them from standing all day--I've been curious about removal, myself. Compression tights really help to prevent future ones from forming if you haven't tried that yet!
