Anyone else's parents using your wedding as a means to show off

Jaimie, on March 18, 2014 at 3:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 29

My parents are paying for the reception, which of course is the biggest cost for our wedding. I have pretty much no say in who gets invited, and it's no cost to me to add additional people. Still I can't figure out why my parents seem to be inviting so many people I've never met or heard of. My parents aren't rich. Maybe upper middle class at best. I'm wondering if this is a way to showcase their success to their friends. Anyone else have this issue. It's going to be weird meeting so many people for the first time at my wedding.

No, no parents showing off here. It's our party on our dime. Good luck with that

I sort of had that issue. My parents also paid for most of our wedding, so they got to invite a bunch of their friends. I know all the people they invited, DH didn't know them all though. If it had been more my choice some of those people wouldn't have been on the list, but oh well. It turned out fine.

My parents are paying for the wedding, and since im her only daughter i think shes just being "proud" lol we did not have a good expirence with my SIL and Brother with their wedding and she used to make comments about how my wedding HAS to be better than theirs was until i said MOM im not competing! i dont care!! lol But as for the guest part, since she is paying i am allowing her to invite who she wants... its not coming out of my pocket so i guess i really dont have much of a say.

Im having a similar issue..... except its from my FMIL,

she flat out said to me "its my sons wedding, and i want it to be a show!"

and i was like "ummm, its OUR wedding, not a show"

and she gave me an "idea" of who she wants to come.. I told her im not even at that point and i wont remember by the time FH and i do sit down and make a list.

(not that shes paying for anything anyways- no pay no say!)

unfortunately, my bigger problem is my parents are going through a divorce right now, and theyre both giving 5, and my mom is trying to invite people to "remind" my dad of what hes losing out on.... with people theyve come to be friends with throughout their marriage..

    it literally makes me facepalm.

I have definitely feel like I"m being forced to "keep up with the Jones." If I had it my way, my reception would be WAY simpler but in the end, if it makes them happy (and they are paying) all I care about is getting married Smiley smile

That's traditional for a chinese wedding, but since we're funding it ourselves, it's not happening Smiley laugh Plus my parents aren't showy people.

If anyone is "showing off" it's us I guess. We have worked so hard for what we have and want to throw an AMAZING party!

Before we postponed last year FH's dad was paying and took over the wedding. It was not what we wanted and was a mess so we postponed and are paying for it our self's.

I think my parents are kinda doing that. My dad is paying for the reception and my mom is helping out however she can. They've asked me to invite family that I don't really know well that I wouldn't have invited myself.

I guess it's not so bad for me though because we have so few people that we would invite ourselves that even with my parents adding people it's still under 100.

My parents are making a show of it, but I am also their only girl and they are paying for most of it so I am ok with them inviting people I'm really only acquainted with. The FH and I would've gladly had a small wedding, but we also don't mind appeasing our parents because they do a lot to support us in starting our life together.

Yes. But, I'm not worried about it. My parents are paying for pretty much the entire wedding. It makes them happy to be able to do this for me. They've been married 32 years but never had a "real" wedding, so my mom is very excited about this event. I'm their only daughter and I was able to invite everyone who I wanted - so the extra 15-20 random people aren't going to bother me. I'll just say "hello. Glad you could be here. So nice to meet you!" :-)

I did have to reign my mom back in when she started trying to invite my younger brother's friends (and their parents!). That was a little much.

My mom is using the wedding as a family reunion - which I am actually kind of excited about. We have a reverse problem however - my mom is worried if it is not "fancy enough" we will *offend* my father's family - who are very "hoity toity" people...I personally don't give a hoot what anyone thinks because its my wedding...so we will see lol.

I don't mind him inviting any one I've met. And am excited for a family reunion. Obviously it's not that big a deal since he's footing the cost of these people. It's just a little weird when my dad brings up a name I've never heard before. I am also the only daughter so that could have something to do with it. They are extremely excited about it.

My dad is 91 and my aunt (my late mom's sister, who is like a second mom to me) is 84 and they both gave me a small list of people to invite. Neither is contributing to the wedding. They're old and it adds maybe 10 people total so we invited them. I didn't think any would show but surprisingly, many are.

The bottom line, for us, was that If it makes them happy, we are ok with it but we were VERY surprised that they were so insistent about the guest list. I mean, who does that?

FH's mom tried to show off for the rehearsal dinner by trying to talk us into having it at this really fancy restaurant. It's super popular around here and it is known for being expensive. We went and looked at the room and I hated it. It was not what I wanted and the food was really limited. She kept trying to say how beautiful the room was and stuff. I think she wanted people to know she planned the rehearsal and could use the restaurant name to show how expensive it was. We went and looked at another restaurant that is nice but not too nice and I loved it.

I have been to a wedding where this was the case. You could see it all over her parents faces, and the "elite" of our city were all invited. Personally, I don't want my parents to help pay (or his) because I only want people there who I am very close to. FH and I are very...introverted when it comes to showing public affection so having a bunch of strangers at our wedding would be weird

Yes... I don't think it was to show off success. For my parents, it was because they wanted to share the experience with their friends. In fact, one guy came to dance with me during the money dance and I had never met him before in my life. Oh well... thanks for the $20, lol.
