Anyone else gone off depo? Kinda TMI.

FutureMrs., on May 9, 2011 at 5:21 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 17

I went off the depo in December or January. I keep getting pretty bad cramps but no spotting or period at all! I have taken so many pregnancy tests and all are negative!

I have had a stomach ache damn near since I got off of it. It's just getting worse! I'm breaking out in odd places and feel pretty gross all around! I'm always achy, tired, and have headaches.

I found a couple of sites that talk about going through a "withdrawal" and that it would last a few weeks, maybe a month. But I've had this stuff going on for longer than that!

I also want to know how long does it take for someone to get back to normal after being on it for a year. I heard it can take up to a year and a half. I don't want to go on my honeymoon and have PMS from hell along with a month long period!

Because of all I've gone through with different birth controls (almost died, got pregnant, now this) I am scared to try any others!

ANY info would be extremely helpful! This just sucks!

You need to see your doctor hun. This sounds like it could be serious.

Is January when your last shot was or when you missed your shot? I skipped my shot beginning of Dec. Period returned late March. when I had depo before, it took about six months to return. It definitely varies.

And sadly what you're experiencing is pretty typical.

How long were you on depo? I was on it for 3 years and had about a month of symptoms were I thought I might be pregnant... upset stomach, tender breasts, etc... I was off Depo for 8 months and never once had a period and the symptoms were at the end of the 8 months not at the beginning. I ended up going to a gyno because a) I wanted on another BC and b) I wanted to know what the hell was going on. Took 2 months of tests, a specialist, and a new BC for me to get my period.

Basically, what the specialist told me was that because I was on it so long, it had thinned my uterine lining so much that it was taking my body that long to build it back up to the point where I could even have a period. The symptoms I was having were because of it building back up.

I was only on it for one year. I don't want another birth control because it messes with my system too much!

I will be pretty pissed if I have to go through a whole other round of testing because of a damn birth control. I was told that I most likely had a brain tumor while on Mirena! This is so frustrating!

I'd see a doc just to tell them your concerns and ask them to check your estrogen levels to make sure they're "normal" for post-Depo.

I was on depo for almost 10 years it took almost a year for my period to come back. But even when I was on it I would have really bad cramps, occasional spotting.

I was on it for about a year. I didn't notice any symptoms and my period returned pretty quickly. I can't remember exactly how long, but it was at least by the time I would have gotten the next shot. It still wasn't regular or anything for awhile though.

I was on it for 5 years. I was supposed to get my shot in April but didn't. Haven't had any problems except for stomach aches & I'm always wondering if they're cramps & then freak out thinking that I'm starting my period! LOL! I haven't had one in so long that I can't remember what cramps are like! But yeah, definately go see your doctor.

@Becky S ~ I gotta ask, since you're not suppose to be on it past 5 years, how did your doctor let you be on it for almost 10??

I was on it for 10 years. After I went off of it I got my period back very quickly. But I also get it if I'm just a few days late getting the shot. After 4 years of trying different birth control pills, can't even tell you how many, my period was out of control. Like I would get horrible cramps and have it for weeks. I convinced the doc to put me back on and have been fine since.

I started on the depo when I was 18 (6 years ago). I went off of it and switched to the pill after 3 1/2 years and it took about a year and a half to get my period back (was not by any means normal, had it one with light spotting for a day, had another one heavy for a almost a month). I had the headaches, stomach pains, etc as well. I ended up getting pregnant on the pill so I went back on the shot and the headaches, etc went away but they came back. I went to the doctor and I just found out that I am almost 2 months pregnant (while I was on the shot!). You should call your doctor.

This shit sucks! I am so freaked out now! I want more kids and don't want to have to go through fertility treatments. I was on the Mirena and I'm scared that it may have messed with my fertility. The day I had it taken out is the day I went on the depo. I was not told over half of the crap I am going through and it really irks me!

I will be making an appointment asap! I will probably switch to a different doctor for someone who WILL tell me everything I should know before they tell me what they think is good for me!

It sounds to me like your body doesn't like any kind of birth control. You should talk to your doctor, definitely.

I get rather concerned sometimes the hell we put our bodies through for birth control purposes.

I was on Depo once and got very, very dry in between spotting. I had a friend start losing her hair! Depo was originally created as a sterilization technique for psych ward patients. That makes you feel great, huh?

FutreMrs - could you just use condoms or a cervical cap? There are other methods that don't require hormones.

When I first got on Depo, it was through planned parenthood. The only info they gave me on it was a sheet of paper THEY made up that listed maybe 5 side effects. I then started having chest pains & nausea & freaked because I thought there was something wrong with me & that it had nothing to do with the shots. And then after a few months they finally gave me the actually folded up never-ending paper that lists everything about the shot. Between that & what they were charging me, I started going to my regular doctor. And then up til this year, I didn't have to pay a penny for it, not even co-pay. And now I'm not on it!

I have only been on the depo a few months, and I am supposed to go back for my 2nd shot March. I have lost massive amounts of hair, and I’ve bled all of the month of February!!! I had a 2 day break for valentines! Wow lol thanks so much depo! Now I see why it’s so effective! Lol you can’t have sex while your bleeding non stop! I’ve never had a problem with my periods until now!
