Anyone done their own fresh flower bouquets and centerpieces?

Kari1886, on July 14, 2009 at 5:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

I need some advice or tips on doing my own bouquets and centerpieces. I don't have the money to pay a florist to arrange the centerpieces and to do the bridesmaid's bouquets so I'm gonna order flowers form Sam's Club. So any advice from vendors, newlyweds that did their own fresh flowers, or future brides that are doing the same would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely do a trail run first. This is an additional expense, but you also need to think about the time involved to make the arrangements. Will you really want to spend your wedding eve and morning rushing to put together bouquets? There are also a lot of things to consider about specific flowers and how they are prepared and used. I would look at my budget and see just how much you do have to spend. You might call around and ask florists about budget packages, and you might consider non-floral centerpieces like candles, mirrors, and ribbon to help save you time and money. If you do decide to do your own florals, roses are among the easiest to work with and hardiest flowers there are. Good luck!

The best advise I can give for an August wedding is keep your flowers hydrated as long as possible. Feel free to drop me an email if you need some specific pointers for different types of flowers. I am happy to help!

I'm doing my own centerpieces, just floating candles and flower (daisies) heads in a bowl, super easy and super cheap. My cousin was in a wedding where they just got only bouquets of roses from costco or sam's club, and wrapped them up with thick ribbons. If you're doing your own flowers it's best to keep it simple.

I was thinking I would do green and white roses in a hand tied bouquet for my bridesmaids and purple gerbera daisies in mason jars with a pretty purple or green ribbon... seems simple enough... I'm just stuck on the tent decorations and what all I should use to decorate with...

I'm doing my own centerpieces and bouquets. I suggest looking around for any wholesale florists in the area - it's a BIG savings. Also definitely do a trial run - it'll help you figure out how long it'll take you to create. And when you do a trial be sure to write down how much everything costs as well as the quantity you get. Also be sure to budget for miscellaneous items [pins, ribbon, etc].

If you don't want to do them yourself try costco - you can order wedding packages that include centerpieces and bouquets. I've also heard that they're very accommodating if you want to swap one item for another.

I would do centerpieces in silks if you are doing them yourself... that way you can do them in advance and not have to worry about them the day of or the day before... the bouquets and boutineers are pretty easy to do comparitively (IMO)... I did my bouquet in silks and headpieces in silks because I didnt want to worry about finding a florist for my destination elopement--one less thing to worry about when we are there! Go to Michaels and they have books in the wedding section about how to put together bouquets...I flipped through them and they were pretty interesting... (My grandmother taught me to do centerpieces, etc a long time ago when she was an event coordinator and needed help!)

I would try your Grocery store

i know Giant has a floral dept and they do floral arrangements. If you do them yourself you have to worry about setting them up the day of and or if someone else will understand your instructions on how to do it

At least you know they are professional and will keep flowers hydrated cause in august you dont want your flowers to die before the reception starts Good Luck

Just a few weeks ago, I helped put together the bouquets and centerpieces for my sister's wedding. She ordered 200 roses from an online site, and didn't do anything with the flowers until the day of the ceremony. We spent 3 hours making bouquets and centerpieces on the day of the wedding, with my fiance dethorning and cutting the roses, my mom arranging the centerpieces, and I made the bouquets. My advice: allow plenty of time. If you order flowers, unbundle them the day before, so there is room for the flowers to open up. If you're arranging flowers the day of or day before, dethorn and prepare them in advance of that. Think about accessories, like pearl pins to put in the flowers, baby's breath, etc and make sure you buy them in advance. (we made one accessory run at 11pm the night before, and then the groom made another the day of) Everything worked out well, but to reduce stress, make sure the operation is streamlined! Best of luck!!! I'm sure they'll be beautiful.

I would keep it simple. I love google. It's free. Type in wedding centerpieces. If you are dead set on flowers then type in flowers also but you could do others things as well, maybe to cut down the costs. Candles would be pretty on mirrors, you might be able to rent the mirrors and then the guests could take home the candles. Or scatter colored beads or stones around. Think of something that respresents you & your future husband that your guests and friends will be able to keep in their homes and pull out in five or ten years and remind them or your wedding day. The possiblities are endless when you start thinking about them. They don't have to match either.

Just remember to use fresh water, cut stems at an angle(Esp.Roses) and use a flower food...If flower food is not available a little sugar in the water is good..Another problem is the heat...Leave all flowers in an airconditioned room with the temp low...........

white or light colored roses bruise easy also..Any more questions do not hesitate to let me know!

    Happy Weddings!

Youtube has a few great videos that will help you, even step by step on putting together the bouts and corsages.... I was going to do my own but found an amazing florist at a GREAT price!

Reminds me, my anniversary is in less than a week! We had gerbera daisies under our tent. A local florist was actually cheaper than the grocery store, and you're more likely to get some "extras" thrown in by a florist than a grocery store.

My wife came up with these neat hard paper vases that were modern looking, where you dropped a baggie in to hold the water and put sand or something else in there to stop the wind from blowing them away. It has been a few years, so I doubt she still has the ordering information. I can look for them though if you're interested.
