Anyone doing Mother-Daughter dance instead of father-daughter?

MzRosaLu, on February 23, 2015 at 5:41 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Just wondering about some of the traditional father-daughter things that happen at weddings and what those of you whose dads won't be at the wedding are doing. My dad passed away so my mom is walking me down the aisle. Not sure what to do about the dance. My FH will have his dance with his mom. I'm not sure I want to have a dance with my mom, as we are both pretty shy to begin with. Do we just do couples first dance, FH with mom dance, and just move on to the rest of the party?

I thought about it but we are just skipping the parent dances all together.

I thought about that too...do you think your FMIL will be offended?

If you want to have a special dance but don't want to dance with your mom, you could always dance with his dad and have a different special man (step dad, grandparent, brother) dance with your mom if you think she'd feel left out. But as you say she is shy maybe best to just skip. I think it would be strange to do mother/son dance with no father(or equivalent)/daughter dance. I have been to numerous wedding without the parent dances so I don't think it is all that weird.

My FH's dad also passed away recently so that's another issue. I would like to skip the parent dances altogether and I'm actually surprised to hear that you've been to other weddings like that. I thought it would be unusual. Maybe I have to find a way to explain this to my FMIL without hurting her feelings, and finding some other way for her to be specially acknowledged.

My dad passed away in 2010. I plan on doing a mother/daughter dance to make my mom feel special/included. I'm walking down the aisle by myself.

Sorry to hear about your fathers passing. I am dancing with both of my parents they both mean so much to me so (both are walking me down the aisle as well) we are having FH and I dance, me and my dad, me and mom and FH and FMIL dance

My dad & I are npt close at all. In fact we have had a pretty terrible relationship. The only reason he's getting to walk me down the isle & have a half a song dance is because he surprisingly offered to pay for our Photography & video. With that said, Both my parents are going to be walking me and i am also going to dance with my mom, since i was born shes had a song that she dedicated to me & always said she would want to dance with me at my wedding.

I've been to a wedding with a mother/daughter dance and didn't think anything of it. But you should do what you prefer. I'm sure your FMIL would understand.

Honestly my father won't be there either but for different reasons that are unforgivable and neither my mom or I are shy but I would definitely like to know people's answers so I am going to share your question if that's OK
