Anyone cooked for their own elopement / wedding?

Here’s the deal. we are having a wedding with a guest list of 35. Probably 30 will show up. We are on a SUPER tight budget ($7K all in and the venue is half of that). That being said, the lowest catering quotes I’m getting are for $50 per person. At $1500 for only a buffet dinner, plus the cost of alcohol, I feel we can get more mileage out of making it ourselves. We are both craft cocktail enthusiasts and have specific recipes we want to use. I hosted a 30th birthday party for him for 15 people, very intimate and we spent maybe $550 on booze AND food and had food left over for two weeks afterwards. Our venue will allow us to cook our own food. My question is - has anyone done this?

That's what we are doing for our wedding of about 140 guests. It fit our budget better but more importantly it fits our laid back, casual wedding better.

I wouldn't want the stress of cooking in the days leading up to the wedding. As for booze, double check with your venue that you can bring your own. Some places won't let you and others make you get your own liquor license. If they allow this, then I would for sure do the booze yourself and just hire a bartender. That will save you a ton of money!

I think you'll end up spending more & stressing SO much if you cook for yourself. Plus you run a huge food safety risk. We had a party catered BBQ for $10 a person, have you looked into that?

Thank you for the suggestion. We don’t like BBQ and there’s something about BBQ and a white dress that is just asking to get dirty.

May I ask how? Our venue has two kitchens so we wanted to use one as the cocktail bar and the other as the cooking and prep area.

My family is very close and have always helped cooking for family events/weddings. That's what we are doing. We are multicultural so we are getting some of the food catered but its not PP its by platter. Maybe not make it buffet?

I was a bridesmaid with a good friend about a month ago. The wedding was at her MIL's home, and they cooked. There were probably about 25-30 people, and they did finger foods, sandwiches, kebabs, fruits/veggies, and salsa/cheese dips. Crazy assortment. But between MIL, a few friends of MIL and actually my fiance, they were able to get all of the food done in about 4 hours. It was nothing fancy, but it was nice and simple.

There’s lots of foods you could do yourself that would hold well. You can do a salad, sides etc from local grocery or Sams /Costco. I would do disposable pans with sternos -less clean up. I’d hire someone for a local bar tending school or college kid. They can also help with clean up.
