Anyone afraid of losing TOO much weight?

Kristen, on February 5, 2013 at 6:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

I bought my dress back in November at a size 22(Yuck) After I did so, I gained ten pounds with all the stress and through the holidays. A few weeks ago, I weighed in and was like @#$% I need to lose weight! So since then, I have been eating clean and working out for roughly 2 hours a day. In the last two weeks, I have lost 12 pounds. As exciting as that is, I'm wondering if I could lose TOO much weight once my dress comes in. I wouldn't mind paying for the alterations, but I have heard that sometimes the dress can't be altered too much smaller. If I lost 20 more pounds, do you think I'd be safe? The dress zips up in the back, not a corset. =/

I think usually 10 pounds or so is a size, and most dresses can be sized up or down 2 sizes with no problem. If you're 2 pounds under your weight when you were measured for the dress, and then you lose 20 more, you might be fine going down 2 sizes. But it probably depends on the dress, if there's a ton of beading/etc. on the bodice.

I would just talk to your seamstress and communicate your concern and that you might need extra fittings in the week or two before your wedding. Or could you have the back altered to a corset back, if the zipper becomes an issue?

My seamstress was independent and super flexible. I had surgery 6 weeks before our wedding that bloated me up like I was pregnant, and then I lost like 10 or 15 pounds out of nowhere just from stress. She literally took in the waist the Tuesday before my wedding. All was just right in the woods. Smiley smile

Not me...That is not a problem I'm facing lol I need to lose 20lbs so this dress can be altered and fit as I'd like it to fit lol

But I agree with Kisalicious, you should communicate your concern with the seamstress, that way you do know your limit and don't have any issues as you get closer to your wedding Smiley winking

How tall are you? Do you have a pic of the dress?

Most dresses can be altered, but pounds/sizes ratio also depends on how tall you are. 20lbs in my world mean barely one dress size. You could also significantly tone up, etc. So there are many factors that come into this equation, but chances are pretty high that a good seamstress can deal with them.

^^yes, I want to change my answer to all of that. I'm 4'11" and was not super toned on wedding day, so 10-15 pounds on me was all smush and made a HUGE difference. Way more than it would have made if I was more muscular or if I were taller.

    Kitty is wise. Smiley smile

I'm 5'5. This is my dress which fit me pretty perfectly when I tried it on. You're right about inches though, I have lost 2.5" from my waist so far. So yeah...I guess I'm just dreading the call since I really just want to lose the weight and look good on my wedding day!

Wow that dress is beautiful, is it blush pink under the lace?????

Don't sweat it. Just talk to your seamstress now, and if you don't feel comfortable with the answers you get, shop around for a different one. I'm sooooooo glad I had an independent seamstress and didn't just stick with the bridal shop. I was forced to do that b/c we moved after I bought the dress but it worked out for the best!!!

It's a gold color actually, but I'm getting it in ivory instead. Well at the dress shop I bought it from, alterations are included! But obviously, if I lose too much weight where the dress needs to be completely reconstructed, they will charge me a fee. Very true, I could just go somewhere else for a second opinion. Just was wondering if any other brides have dealt with it before or heard of it happening. This dress was way over budget for me! lol

That is really a gorgeous dress!

Talk to the seamstress in some general terms. But ultimately you won't know until you actually lose the weight. You could lose it mostly in your lower body, so that wouldn't be so much of an issue for alterations.

Thank you! I thought so too Smiley winking

Yes exactly! I've lost a lot dieting and exercising before, but who knows how much I'll actually lose. I don't want to be embarrassed if I don't reach my goal lol I'll do what you said and just ask generally speaking. I don't want to end up ordering another dress if something goes wrong! Gah

    No, you'll be fine!

I would just see what the schedule is like at the shop in the weeks before their wedding, how they typically handle last-minute body changes. My seamstress said it's super common, all of her brides drop at least five pounds of nerves the week of their wedding so she keeps her calendar open. Smiley smile But the shop where I bought the dress wanted to finish my fittings 6 weeks ahead of time. IDK if they would have charged me extra for "rush" work.

That dress is so gorgeous, you're going to look amazing. Don't sweat. It will be fine.

No way Jose to me that would be GREAT NEWS I wouldn't care about paying more for my alterations to make mine smaller!

Third (or fourth or fifth) what the ladies said about the bridal shop. My dress had to be taken in at the bust (shocker) and waist (shocker again) but I doubt I went down more than a size. Your dress looks pretty similar to mine, and if your seamstress is good, you will be fine. My alterations were $300 including boob cups & bustle.

Great idea Melodie! A Corset always gives you room to gain or lose. I wanted that originally but loved the way my dress looked. I'm willing to pay for the alterations, I just want it to be possible to make it a few sizes smaller! Fingers crossed.
