Any couples who created a new last name?

Just wondering if anyone else has done something similar and what your experience was with the legality of it. Which I recognize can vary from state to state.

ETA: we went to court today (FL) to get f

advice on it. We were told it's definitely legal, we would just both need to get legal name changes, as there is no way to do this by marriage license.

We would also have to do to after the wedding (we don't have enough time to do it now because we need our passports for the honeymoon).

Just wondering if the process has been smooth for those who have done it and how long it took?

@Bookcasehat that's a great phrase to use when people try to change our mind: "we're not asking you to live with it."

    LOL

FH are both hyphenating, but not blending our last names.

I brought this idea up to my FH to take the last part of each of our last names which would be SkiWell.. since we are always like "team skiwell" but he shut it down Smiley sad lol

Definitely an interesting idea. Not something I've ever heard of but I like it Smiley smile if you have kids in the future that'll be a nice story to tell them!

Has anyone in this thread who commented that they were planning on doing a new last name together - done it successfully??

Currently in the process with social security of creating a new last name. They updated my wife's without issue to the new last name, unfortunately they spelled my new name wrong on the new social security card. Now they are giving me trouble saying it has to be some combination of our previous last names and that it should have never been allowed to be changed the first time without a court petition, $400 cost.

Might just be the luck of who your paperwork ends up with at the office. This is also specific to Florida, every region is different.

Definitely think about the long term effects if you're into ancestry stuff. I would also spend some time figuring out how to merge them and ensure it sounds good. I know two couples who have done it. One was Rockwell and Landsman who did Rockland which I think works well. The other just did not.
