Any couples who created a new last name?

Nessa, on May 19, 2017 at 5:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

FH and I are seriously considering merging our last names to create a new one. So we would both change our last names after marriage.

Just wondering if anyone else has done something similar and what your experience was with the legality of it. Which I recognize can vary from state to state.

ETA: we went to court today (FL) to get f

advice on it. We were told it's definitely legal, we would just both need to get legal name changes, as there is no way to do this by marriage license.

We would also have to do to after the wedding (we don't have enough time to do it now because we need our passports for the honeymoon).

Just wondering if the process has been smooth for those who have done it and how long it took?

I believe it's legal. Look up Carlos Penavega. That couple did it when they got married.

Should be legal.. I have a friend who was planning on doing that until they broke up. She married someone else and ended up NOT merging last names to make up a new one, but I thought it was a cool idea!

Our dog's 'last name' is a combo of ours mainly conceived by our friends.. we considered doing it legally for about half a second and then decided it wasn't for us. I have heard of other people doing it through, and it is definitely legal if done right!

@GoldFisch, our families are not conservative but I know we'll get some pushback just because it's not traditional.

That's okay for us though. We got pushback when we started dating at 16. We got pushback when we moved out, before marriage. We got pushback when we moved 5 hours away... we're used to it.

Me and my FH will be doing it. We looked into it and it does cost quite a bit in CA to change your name legally. So we decided to keep our names for now and when we can afford it go in a change our names. We definitely got some sideways looks from parents and what not.. but our friends have been super supportive, and most importantly, we are happy!

We'll be doing it! Neither of our families accept our marriage (ss) so it made sense. We wanted to use a name in a language spoken in Africa originally and decided on Swahili.

I think this is what my fiancée and I are going to do. Taking either name just doesn't work for us and hyphenating would result in a monster of a last name. So we're merging both our mothers maiden names. But the logistics of doing that and then returning to china the next week is making my head spin.

It will cost us almost double here in FL (by the time we renew all our documents).

My good friend and her H did this. They used the first part of his last name and the last part of hers. I'm not sure how complicated the process was for them.

I will say to steel yourselves for comments from people, a lot of people will have something to say.

I seriously considered doing this. Ours would be Redsley, which isn't too weird. But at the end of the day I couldn't part with my name. But I'm pretty sure if it's for marriage purposes it isn't too difficult

Our animals are all RhoFatta's and that's how family refers to us, I think it would be funny to merge them since we've had it like this for the last 5 years, but I really can't wait to get rid of my dad's last name. Rightfully.

I absolutely adore this idea!!! FH and I are thinking about doing this or just both hyphenating our names. The only thing is hyphenated last names can sometimes be a pain in the ass

We are planning to do this. I'm anticipating some comments from people, but it's our name. We're the ones who have to live with it, so we have to do what feels right to us.

We've talked about doing it (we already refer to ourselves as our combined last name. But then we joked about it to FMIL and she was devastated.

I mean, I'm team "it's our marriage," but neither FH or I were overly committed one way or another.

I wouldn't worry about doing it before you get married. Worry about name changes after you travel. Sounds cool.

Technically you can change your name to whatever you want, so it's definitely legal. I had a friend who's sister changed her name when she finished transitioning - she decided to go for changing her first and last name while she was already going through the process.
