Another Cake Question: Number of Servings

Christine, on March 4, 2011 at 4:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

How big of a cake (number of servings) are you ordering or did you order? And how many guests are/were you expecting. I realistically expect no more than 120 people (we're inviting more). I want to have enough for everyone but I also don't want to buy way more than we need and waste it along with the extra money. Some people may not eat any cake yet some may get more than one piece. Our baker says that her servings are based on 1"x2"x4" slices because that is the industry standard. That seems pretty small to me. I just stressing out and don't know what to order. Thanks for your help!

We had 85 people and ordered for 75. We had HALF of the cake left over, and enough was cut for everyone. I would order enough for 60 people, if I were you. That is a HUGE slice.

Wedding cake slices are small… but that's because of what you said before… some people don't eat the cake, so some people eat two. (i usually end up picking at FH's…) The number you give your baker at your consultation is estimated. In the contract it should state when the final guest count is due, same as the caterer. The baker should give you options and price out the difference between a tiered cake for 120 or a tiered for 100 + a 1/2 sheet. It will also depend on if you plan on saving your top tier or not. If you want to save it, then the cake gets bigger to accommodate.

I've always heard that you don't need as much cake as people attending because not everyone eats cake and usually there is alot left over. With that in mind I ordered a cake for 75 people even though we expected 90. It would have been fine but the venue put aside the top layer of the cake for us to take home. When the servers cut the cake and served everyone there was about 10 pieces left on the table, by the end of the night it was all gone so no leftovers. A couple people I know said they didn't get any (at the reception they were walking around and weren't served) so I know it probably would have been better if they'd cut and served the top layer as well. Make sure you let the servers know if you plan on preserving your top tier for your anniversary or if you want it cut up and served.

I'm having 125 people and the same number of slices. No, I don't think it will all be eaten, but I wanted 4 tiers and that's the number of slices I had to order to get it. Also, I'm having each tier a different flavor, so I'm hoping people will want to have more than one piece Smiley smile

I'm serving my cake as dessert, so I needed enough cake for each guest. If you aren't serving it, you can always order half the amount of cake. Most guests will forget to take it home anyway.

My MIL was really worried there wasn't going to be enough cake. As the last weding she went to, not everyone got some and then it was gone. SO, we ordered a 9 & 7" rounds for 280 people. We had half the large round left and the whole 7" round. If you're offering other desserts than cake, order less cake.

Konichiwa hints on something important -- make sure you have professionals cut the cake. They will make sure it gets served. The weddings I've been to where someone from the house party or friend or whatever cut it, more than half was left over. My wedding coordinator re-iterated this to me a few weeks ago too.

Our list is at 235, and we ordered for 180. Most of our guests live out of the state or the country.

We have 100 people on our list, and I am almost positive everyone will be coming. Its all of our closest friends and our closest family. So, were ordering 50 cupcakes, maybe 60, and were ordering a two tiered cake that serves 50.

Thanks for everyone's input. The venue will cut and serve (tableside) the cake. We are not offering other desserts. People either have cake or get no dessert :-)

We ordered for 100. They will be cutting the cake at the venue. And we are a family who loves cake...so I hope it all goes.

We are having 100 guests (I hope!) and we ordered a cake with 50 servings, 2 dozen cupcakes, and a groom's cheesecake. We're also going to have 2 dozen vegan cupcakes. My caterer thinks this will be plenty since we are not having it passed out while people are sitting. They will cut it and leave it at the cake table and if people want it they'll go grab it!

In order to have the design we wanted, we had to have 4 tiers. The bottom tier is 12" to accomodate my cake topper. The top tier is nothing more than an oversized cupcake.

We are expecting 60 people and paid for 60 people at $5.00 a slice. I am also having a grooms cake and sweet table. I am sure there will be a lot left over, but that's okay, people who drink usually have the munchies.

There were 134 guests at my daughters wedding. The bakery recommended cake for 85. We still had cake left over. The pink champagne cake leftovers didn't hurt my feelings....my waistline yes, my feelings no. LOL!
