Am I a spinster?

FH brought home a locked security box from his parents' house. He needed to drill it open because his dad couldn't remember the combination. Inside he found his parents' marriage certificate from 1964 and started laughing as he handed it to me. We both think it's very funny and kept the certificate to frame. I'm much older than his mom was at her wedding, what would I be called?

    ETA: this is why I don't WW before coffee. They actually put spinster on the certificate? I'm glad times have changed. I would have definitely gotten spinster on mine

    My coworker was telling me yesterday that she was 26 when she got married (she's in her 50s) and how that was considered old to be getting married at the time. I'll be 34 when I get married. I'm totally a spinster.

    I am so glad times have changed. Just sometimes I wished times would change even faster.

    I felt for example pretty weird about the sex and the city movie when she got married and they said 40 is the last time a woman looks good in a wedding dress....

    Definitely a spinster!

    This made me google. It looks like "spinster" and "bachelor" were used to describe unmarried people by the British on official documents until 2005! I wonder if Hong Kong updated their classification?

    Generally, 25 was considered the age at which one became a spinster - with the idea being that no respectable man would want to marry someone that old. However, this idea came from the days in which women's only (viable) option was to get married. If she did not (generally) she would live with her parents until they died, and then become someone's "ward" after their death.

    This was, of course, both a western and an upper class idea.

    The best (worst?) part about this is that he was 29 and still considered a bachelor, but her at the ripe old age of 25, moves into spinster territory. Very funny!
