Altering neckline to a sweetheart

Katie , on September 25, 2012 at 11:20 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

I fell in love with Maggie Sottero Caprice (photo attached), but I really want a sweetheart neckline. A few bridal shops I called said this would be no problem, however I am worried it might ruin the integrity of the dress. Has anyone done this before? If so, before and after pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Smiley smile

I don't have pictures right now... but I had a straight neckline (with maaaaaybeee the SLIGHTEST dip) that I have changed to a sweetheart. I'll be picking up the dress on Thursday.

If you want, I can show you before/after pictures on how the neckline looks.

My mom has already altered my straight across neckline to a sweet heart. I am sure a competent seamstress can do this.

There are a couple dresses i've fallen in love with but would've preferred them as a sweetheart neckline. i consulted with a seamstress on both dresses and they say it can be done.

you've chosen such a beautiful dress! if you're wanting to see what it would look like as a sweetheart, pin the bodice into a sweetheart when you try it on. that's what we did with a couple dresses, it'll give you an idea.

Thanks! From most of the research I have done it seems that this is a pretty common request of brides.

Mrs. Reeses Pieces if you could show me pics of how your dress turned out that would be great! Did you have the bridal salon do it for you or did you go to a local seamstress?

My only concern is that the top sits so low already, if you add a dip to it depending on if you're well endowed or not, you may end up popping out, Its a beautiful dress tho, Also have you tried on a sweetheart neckline dress, I found I liked a straighter neckline because the other I felt like I was popping out of.

Yayyy for a Maggie Bride. I love love love Maggie Sottero! I have a Maggie ball gown that I love and sweethearts on her gowns just tops it off for me.

You can most certainly have this done. I know a lot of people request this. I've heard this is one of the easiest things for them to do when alt a wedding gown. Beautiful wedding dress. Congrats! Keep us posted on how it goes.

Yup! One of my requirements was a sweetheart neckline and every time I tried on a dress that didn't have I was told it can be altered to have one.

I love Sweetheart necklines. That was a must have for my dress as well.

I am having my dress altered in to a sweetheart neckline and I can't wait. Our BM dresses have a sweetheart as well... I just think it's so much more flattering most of the time!

Michelle - you are right, if I had a big bust it probably would be too low. However, I am not well endowed in that area. i am going for the sweetheart because it gives the illusion I am fuller up top.

Christine - that vera wang dress looks beautiful. As a professional how much would you charge for an alteration like that?

Katie - alterations prices vary greatly by region, so I'm not sure how much help this will be. Here are the charges this bride had for my alterations:

Make 92" double layer ivory veil $45.00

    Sweetheart neckline $40.00

Lower back bodice of dress $50.00

    Hem $75.00

    Bustle 7 points $49.00

Make a headpiece from her mother's old headpiece $10.00

Purchase Black millinery ribbon and sew black sash onto dress and

make hairbraid bow (materials and sewing) $45.00

Sew her custom label inside dress n/c

The veil I made was an exact copy of a VW veil which cost $199

David's would have charged her $150 for the hem

David's would not have done the sweetheart neckline alteration and

they would not have lowered the bodice back of dress as she wanted to have done

We had a total of 4 fittings.

Thanks Christine, your prices seem very reasonable. Hopefully I can find similar in ny!

Hi Katie - I want a sweetheart neckline too and the bridal salon I am getting my dress at said they could pinch the fabric instead to not have any cost associated with it. It looked nice when they showed it to me (haven't gotten it done yet). If I get it made into a sweetheart neck, the salon was going to charge me $200. A ridiculous price, yes but I'm just going for the pinching. FYI I am in NJ, so I imagine the prices would be similar in NY. The alterations with my dress are included in the price. I called RK Bridal in NYC to see how much they were charging for the dress and the price of alterations. They said they don't charge more than $350 for alterations. Hopefully that can give you some sort of idea on what is being charged in the area.
