Altering Large Dress to a Size Small-medium

Paige, on October 15, 2020 at 3:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4

So this is the dress! I love it! Based on the reviews the v neck is low low and the slit is high ... I'm thinking since I am usually a small, medium .. by getting a large I can a. either use the excess fabric to close the v a bit so I'm not hanging out and I can sew up the slit a bit. Is that super common ? Will it work by getting a larger dress. Most of the reviews suggested sizing up.

Depending on the return policy maybe you can order more than one size and then get input from a seamstress. You could then return whichever one you don’t need.

That dress looks similar to a dress I just altered.

I am wearing size 12-14 kids size! I am only 4”7 😩 This dress is size 0. The dress was taller than me. The torso was long. My torso is way too short for it.

I alter lots of my clothes because I have to. I can’t afford to pay someone to alter everything 🤣
    1. I opened the sleeves, shortened the shoulders just on the outside part. Because my shoulders are not that wide. I hope you don’t have to do this. It’s a pain.
    2. I open the sewing on the waist, shorten it there and fixed the v cut so there is no peeking.
    3. Hemmed the bottom. Yeah, I am that short 😑
    Good luck!

I would order a medium if you are usually a small/medium. That style should allow a little give and a large would probably be way too big.

You can manipulate the bust and slit pretty easily by ordering your regular size and adding some stitches to close up those areas. Wrap style dresses are usually pretty adjustable (I like them in particularly because I have a smaller waist for my size and its easier to get a "fitted" look with a wrap dress than an off the rack dress in my size). I don't think ordering a size up is necessary and would worry you'd have too much billowing fabric with a large and would need a lot more adjustments than necessary, which would drive up the cost of alterations. I'd probably go with a medium to be safe.
