Alterations Help!

Elizabeth, on May 17, 2019 at 12:16 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14
I have already bought my dress and my wedding in is May 2020. A year from now. When I bought my dress, I tried on size too small in store so I ordered a size up. When I went to try it on for the first time, my experiences was horrible. The woman wouldn’t help me zip up my dress and I was alone so I just packed up my dress and left. I’ve lost about 10 lbs since and I haven’t tried on my dress since that day. I LOVE the dress and I know it will probably need altered. When should I take my dress to get altered? I am not taking it to the place I bought my dress from due my experience and I’m thinking about getting a corset put in the back or do you guys think I even should look at the back of the dress. Please help give me an idea!

I'm also getting married in May 2020. I bought my dress, and it's waiting patiently in the closet at FMILs house (so FH doesn't see it).

I probably won't take it in for alterations for a few more months. I'm not looking for any fancy changes, just take it in a bit and shorten it so it doesn't drag on the floor. You have plenty of time.

Two years ago, I bought my dress too small, about 2 inches from zipping up all the way. Life happened, the wedding was postponed, and I ended up gaining 50lbs. Since last September I've lost 40lbs and in February we decided to have the wedding in June. I began to bust my butt in the gym, began intermittent fasting, and keto. Now, my dress fits and had to be altered to fit me because it's a bit big. The seamstress asked me to bring my dress a month before the wedding. I pick it up in 2 weeks.

Yep! That's keto. I was on the smaller size to begin with in January but had put on 20lbs over the past 4 years. 4 months into keto and I'm down 25 lbs and I tried on a size 6 wedding dress last month! Congratulations to you Ivelisse.

Elizabeth, I'd say to start alterations about 4 months before.

That's awesome! And, thank you! I agree with her on the alterations, especially if you plan on losing weight.

I'll be doing mine 4-6 weeks before the wedding. That's when the seamstress likes to do them. Which means I only have 6 more weeks to try to lose weight ☹️

You have so much time! Are you planning on losing more? If so wait until the wedding gets closer.

I don’t plan to lose more to be honest. It would be amazing to lose more but I am also going back to school to be a teacher so I won’t be able to hit the gym as much as I was, if at all. I will finish school in April and get married in May. 🙈💁🏼‍♀️

I was done the same way at david's bridal... left standing in the dress for over a half hour for my hour appointment and felt extreme pressure to buy it because i liked it and it fit like a glove lol.....I wanted to try another dress on but they insisted making me wide hips go in under a dress i knew would fit if i was able to step into the top if it. it was disappointing. I'm wondering the same thing... iv lost 20 and the corset back is already pulled as tight as it will go... i'm still losing and would like to know myself because in sure its gonna need to be taken in by next year..... but i really just wanted to speak out and tell you , your dress shopping experience you are not alone.. i wont go back there either.Smiley heart

My sister bought her dress there and they were amazing to her but that was about 8 years ago! Lol so when I started to read about people saying don’t go there...I thought no it will be fine! I bought an amazing dress! I loveeee it. I just barely tried on the one that came in after I purchased it. The girl didn’t help me at all. I honestly don’t even know if it zips because the girl refused to help. I was so upset. I cried. Contact their corporate office. Nothing. I’ll have to get it out soon and try it on but it is in our tiny apartment and with two dogs (can’t try it on with them two around!) lol **Despite the experience we will look amazing on our wedding days**

I'm getting married March of 2020 and I'm starting the alterations process on December 7th. When you should take it in also kind of depends on where you're taking it to. I'm doing mine a little earlier because the person I'm taking it to is a one-woman business so she says it takes a tiny bit longer for her to alter dresses because she's the only one who does the altering Smiley smile

If you're going to a place that has a bunch of people who can alter and take care of it, you'd be fine with going in next February/March. If you have a business in mind give them a call and see what they recommend! Smiley smile
