Alterations Help

Anna, on January 27, 2020 at 11:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16
I recently went to my first alterations appt. I told my sister to take pictures of the dress, I hardly have any. Well the top fits me big. The lady is going to take it in. Well when I looked at the back, I noticed a big gap in the buttons. I'm scared that when she takes it in, I'll stretch out even more. When I put that part together before, the buttons didnt stretch out too much and looked like the rest of the buttons. Am I being paranoid? Should I call tomorrow?

Any help would be appreciated.

From what my alterations lady says you should wait to secure the button and loops until the wedding because they can stretch out easily. So she never loops them in any of my fittings. She also added hooks on the inside of the back of the dress. So I would hook in the back and then do the buttons. It gives the back more support and stability.

Here's the back of my dress. Not that you can see anything, but you can tell its hooked together. At the wedding we will do all the buttons. Alterations Help 3

That’s a real concern. The elastic for the buttons is definitely stretching too far because you shouldn’t see the loops. How do the loops look when they aren’t buttoned? The poster above (who added the picture) has elastic loops that look normal. Just wondering if yours already appear stretched when unbuttoned too.

The second picture is me trying it on for the first time. I noticed it and thats why i pushed it together to see how the buttons would look. I honestly hate the space. I don't have the dress with me so i can't really look at it. But i'll call tomorrow to see what they tell me. My second fitting isn't until march.

Yes, the back should look like your second pic. Hopefully it’s an easy fix

I would ask the seamstress to put in hidden hooks or a hidden zipper, so that you are not relying on those delicate buttons, they can be more for show

This same thing happened to me while trying on the dress for the first time. It fit perfectly except for that the buttons were a bit stretched too so you would see my skin. Freakin rib cage lol! The girl ordered a size up for me and said that it shouldn't need many adjustments

I would ask your seamstress more about what they can do about that space honestly, because those elastics are very delicate and so are the buttons. You don't want one to pop.

I'm going to have to. I called the boutique, cause i don't live in the same town, and she didn't understand what i was saying. I explain that the loops are stretched, She told me they will tighten it up and see what else needs to be done. It annoys me cause alterations are costing me a lot. I feel like they might tighten it up so much that it won't be able to fix.I don't have enough to pay for another dress. But i was trying to stay calm but she was not understanding me. I even asked if she can put a note on saying not to mess with the top, she told me she can't do that. I bet she thought i was crazy. I'm calling tomorrow and hopefully talk to someone else. Whats worst is my seamstress is having shoulder surgery and won't be in next month.

Ugh! I am sooo so sorry you have these racing thoughts! Do you know if the elastic loops are big already or are they smaller?

Also how did the top fit you big, but the elastics were stretched? I would have assumed she would need to take the top part our a bit so that it fits better and the button loops don't stretch.

Thank you. Even if its something small that can be fix, I would like to know I'm heard somehow. But the top never felt like it had any support. I'm a 32 and the top is meant for a 33. She was telling me that when they take it in, the buttons in back will connect and not stretch out anymore. I wonder if what she says is right or it wont be able to be fixed.

I just thought i would update you. I called and the woman that answered was so helpful. She even went to check my dress to see what i was talking about. I was asking the other lady, who i think was one of the alteration lady, to look at my dress and she wouldn't do it. Well i bought my dress new online from still white. Well when the woman looked at the dress, she asked me if the dress was used. I told her no and and the girl i brought it from told me it was new. She told me that it looks like it was a sample dress. The loops wouldn't be that stretched out. She told me designers don't sent it out that way. I'm a little mad. I really thought i was buying a brand new dress. Oh well, i learned my lesson.

Can't the seamstress take the stretched loops out and put in new ones? Or add a little metal hook and eye at the top for more support? Or switch to corset back?

I called today and they told me in the second appt she will fix that. I was freaking out but shes only touching the bottom. But she went to look at my dress and knew what i was talking about. Sadly i thought i purchased a new dress online, but the lady told me the loop shouldnt have stretched at all. She thinks the dress was purchased off the rack. I'm a little upset the girl lied to me, but i learned my lesson.

The good thing, yeah they will. I'm just upset that it was off the rack. Nothing wrong with buying off the rack. Just that she made me believe it was new dress. That' the disappointing part.
