Alterations! Help!

Taya, on October 12, 2019 at 2:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 12

Hi! I am looking forward to my first alterations appointment. Before my first appointment, I was wondering what the best option would be for changing the underskirt of my dress. I love everything about it but would ideally love for the beige underskirt to be white!
What is the best course of action for this? Is it even possible? Do I just buy a skirt online and have the seamstress sew it over the top of the current underskirt?

I literally have no idea where to start with going about alterations and if my desired look is even possible.

Any advice is very much appreciated!

That is a gorgeous dress! The reason the underlay is not white is so that the intricate lace detail will stand out. If you change it to a white underlay I think you will lose that lace detail and it won't pop as much.

Oh my goodness, your dress is gorgeous!! Personally, I wouldn’t change the underskirt- if you do, you are going to lose all that beautiful lace detail! It’s just going to be white on white

I wouldnt change it either. That would be complicated, completely change the look of the dress and like the others said the detail wont show.

This is one of the most beautiful dresses I’ve laid eyes on !! The detailing is so gorgeous ! I think if the underskirt were white the lace detailing wouldn’t be as noticeable .. i vote to keep it as is - but it’s not my wedding and YOU have to be happy in it !

I was totally just skimming through forum photos and your dress caught my eye! Like Smiley love Smiley love oh my gosh your dress is gorge! The beige creates a nice transition from the skirt to the train to your veil. And as PP have said, it really highlights the beautiful (and expensive) lace detailing. I understand the dress anxiety thing though, and running through the what-ifs.

If you want peace of mind (totally get it!) you should consult with a seamstress - she would be able to explain what can be done reasonably and she could also show you what it might look like by holding a piece of ivory fabric underneath to help you visualize the end result. Maybe ask her to try different shades of ivory/champagne/etc. Would you add ivory under the bodice as well or just the skirt?

That said, I personally love the dress as it is and I think changing the skirt from beige to ivory would do the dress an injustice! And possibly make the bodice/skirt look disjointed.

    Thank you all so much!

I'm now feeling more confident in just leaving the dress how it is.

I'm wondering if that's even a possibility.. maybe if you ordered it that way. Best bet, as others have said, is to talk to your seamstress and see what she thinks! Honestly the dress is absolutely gorgeous the way it is and it all goes so well together!!! Let us know what happens when you go for your alterations though.
