Alterations - BALLGOWN CONVERTED - TWO IN ONE DRESS? Help!!!

Monica, on November 30, 2016 at 12:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

Hi hi hi! Okay ladies. I need major advice. I purchased a ball gown type dress & I was hoping I can convert that into a mermaid or Aline dress under it? Kind of a TWO in one style. I know that might not be possible , but can that happen? I know it would of been easier if I bought a mermaid and then added the tulle on top. But, this dress was a spontaneous buy, I walked in wanting a mermaid lace and walked out with this different beautiful dress. I just wanted to know if it may be possible. The picture is down below. Thank you so much in advance!! Xoxo

I would talk to a seamstress.

Definitely take it to a seamstress to see what can be done. It's impossible for us to know just by looking at a photo.

Agreed. Talk to a seamstress ... but it's so beautiful the way it is.

Thanks a bunches. I love it. Our wedding will be outside in my fiancés yard. Gorgeous. I'm afraid it'll be too big. I was hoping to surprise him with a different dress but it being the same one for the reception. I really do hope I'm making sense. lol I just wanted to ask - hoping it wasn't a crazy question. Lol

@Monica, I'm no seamstress, but I think your best bet is to turn it into an A line by removing that top tier and removing some of the under layers. I don't see this being able to be turned into a mermaid.

But, your seamstress may know better

I have no clue if your alterations would be possible but I just wanted to stop by to say that your dress is so gorgeous. I love it as is and I would be hesitant to do any major alterations

It is possibly- honestly anything is possible. with the right amount of money.

But- it would have been cheaper to ADD a tulle skirt than to take that one off- IMHO.

Can you return the dress for one that is already convertible.

It's a beautiful dress, but its totally different from what you want. exchange would be good so you can buy the one you really like and convertible.

Greenebunny (I am sure I spelled that wrong) has a convertible dress that may be similar to what you are looking for. Here she is in the first reply:

An A - line would be ideal! I would prefer that!

Thank you everyone, means a lot to me! I tried to see if I can return and they said no. I'd have to pay the full amount completely and then pay for the whole other dress. I was thinking something like Nia Sanchez dress. Ahhh. I should of just done the a line dress, then added the tulle skirt. Boo.

It wouldn't surprise me (if it were possible to do what you want) if the modifications cost the same as or more than just buying a second dress.

As others have said, definitely talk to a seamstress. They will be able to tell you if it is possible and how much it will cost.

You might be better off selling this dress then buying the dress you actually want/love.

This dress is seriously stunning though, it would be impossible for me to part with it.

Can you exchange it for store credit?

I'd get quotes from TWO professionals before making a decision either way- i'm guessing it's going to be expensive to make the alteration.

Perhaps a reception dress is possible, an A line formal but not wedding. Perhaps off rack/ on sale. Not a heavy but affordable.

I would talk to a seamstress... and especially what jorocka said, talk to 2 to get quotes. It will probably be a lot of money.

However I will say that the dress you have is absolutely gorgeous and I wouldn't want to change a thing on it.
