Hi gals, I just brought my dress to the tailor yesterday to have some alterations. Hi gals,

I just brought my dress to the tailor yesterday to have some alterations.

The plan is to:

-shorten the dress

-sew in cups

-take it in a few inches in the back

After all the measurements were done, the tailor said, "this will cost about $200-$300". I didn't know what to expect, but said ok. She then wrote me a receipt for $300 plus tax and said, "I'll have it done in a month, I'm too busy with prom right now". Which was fine because my wedding is not until July. But... $300? This price feels a little high to me? I didn't know really what to expect but I thought maybe I could get it done for $100.

What has your experience been like at the tailor? How much did you pay for alterations?

I just want to make sure I'm not getting swindled.

Mine was about 550. I had 4 layers (one of them lace) hemmed, straps shortened, cups added, taken in a bit on the sides and a bustle added. I wish I was only paying 300!

I had my alterations done last Thursday. Based on other brides experience here on ww I budgeted to spend 500-600. I lost almost 20 pounds since I bought the dress so they had to take it in 2 sizes, hem the bottom and add those bottoms to the back for walking and dancing (sorry total brain fart on what it's called). I was very surprised with my total $335!!! I was happy with the outcome.

My alterations are around $600. I needed cups sewn in, a couple inches taken in, bustle, and hem. It's an all lace ball gown so it's just more expensive due to the work load. Alterations are expensive - even if you're just getting a dress hemmed. It's much more work than you think it is!

This is a good deal, especially since you're shortening the dress. I don't know what your dress looks like or the kind of fabric it is, but hemming a wedding dress is A LOT of work. If it's lace, it would usually cost $250 and up JUST FOR THE HEM! I think you came out pretty well. I also don't know where you got your dress from, but some companies do what's called a Hollow to Hem measurement (and usually costs a little extra), but it takes your exact measurement with shoes so you can avoid getting your dress hemmed. This cost me an additional $80, but if I were to have had it hemmed after the fact it would have been over $250 just to shorten alone because of all the layers and lace on my dress. Most wedding dresses have to be hemmed by hand because of the delicate fabric. So, I think you did well!

It's a good deal and it usually takes a while for it to get don't so don't worry. I have 500-600 budgeted. I have some lace detailing on the shoulders I need loosened so I'm worried about that cost!

Wow! I honestly had no idea how much alterations cost (probably should have looked it up before I went in...) But based on what you are all saying, $300 is a good price for me.

My dress was $800 when I bought it new, so I was surprised that I was spending nearly half the cost on alterations.

And some of you are talking $500 plus, wow! Well, atleast we will all look beautiful Smiley laugh

We have a family friend That is my seamstress. She charged me $220 for hem, bustle, cups, adjustments to the straps and bust area.

I was charged a flat fee of $800, no matter what needed to be done. I've had two fittings so far and have needed a lot done. I probably would've ended up paying just as much or probably more elsewhere. I feel like 300 sounds reasonable.

I paid 480 to have my dress hemmed, add a 7 point bustle, have my belt attached and have the dress taken in around my thighs and my waist. I was surprised at how expensive my alterations were especially since I only paid $350 for my dress. I've learned since then that this is the norm for wedding dress alterations though...

    200. shorten dress lace at bottom has to be removed, take it in several inches, sew in cups and add straps.

I took mine to an outside alterations lady, who incidentally has done work for the Governor. I say that, because you would think she'd charge A LOT more... Anyway, I got my dress chopped, the tulle raised, and hemmed for $150.
