Alteration costs - how much did you pay?

Stephanie, on April 24, 2016 at 10:11 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 35

Hi gals,

I just brought my dress to the tailor yesterday to have some alterations.

The plan is to:

-shorten the dress

-sew in cups

-take it in a few inches in the back

After all the measurements were done, the tailor said, "this will cost about $200-$300". I didn't know what to expect, but said ok. She then wrote me a receipt for $300 plus tax and said, "I'll have it done in a month, I'm too busy with prom right now". Which was fine because my wedding is not until July. But... $300? This price feels a little high to me? I didn't know really what to expect but I thought maybe I could get it done for $100.

What has your experience been like at the tailor? How much did you pay for alterations?

I just want to make sure I'm not getting swindled.

That's a steal IMO. I paid $560 to get my dress hemmed, cups added, straps shortened, and the sides/back taken in. I think it also depends on where you're located (I'm in the DC area). Idk if you'd be able to get alterations for a wedding dress done for $100 anywhere unless they were minimal (meaning the dress fit you perfectly and you only needed to add a bustle or something).

ETA: Hemming cost WAY more than I thought it would (I think it was about $125 just to hem my dress).

I don't have a dress yet but I once paid $100 just for a BM dress. She charged by layer for the hem (the dress had 3) plus I had to have the straps shortened. It was a cheaper estimate than where I bought the dress (Davids).

That sounds great to me. I paid $480 in a medium-sized town in the Midwest to take in a heavily beaded bodice, add a seven point bustle, and a simple tulle hem.

I've paid $80-$100 for BM dresses alone.

Mine were $330 plus tax, It needed shortened by almost an inch, the bust had to be brought in some, and I had a bustle added for the train. My alterations were almost half as much as the actual dress was.

Hemming can be really expensive and time consuming based upon how many layers they are shortening.

I had the heaviest layer shortened and it was $100 just for that layer. I had it taken it off the side seams and it was $150 for that.

I did not do the cups as my dress already had them. I think $300 is a great deal to get it all done.

My first fitting cost me $170. I have my second fitting this coming week- I think the first round of alterations costs more than the second and third- but largely depends on how many layers you have, appliqués etc

It depends on your dress's fabrics and construction. Something as simple as hemming can take a long time if there's a lace hem that has to be taken off and reattached, or umpteen layers that all have to be hemmed/trimmed.

$300 is about average for what most brides pay on here. Many pay $500

That's actually a great deal! Depending on the dress, it's not uncommon for alterations to cost almost as much as the dress does.

I was surprised in a good way.. My dress has an all lace hem and beaded bodiced. I had 4 fittings, then lace was moved twice, and they had to take in around boobs and waist. They also added in a 9-point bustle.

I was honestly expecting $500 because this was also at a higher end bridal shop. Final bill for alterations was $198. I was thrilled.

That's definitely a steal! Brides pay upwards of $500 for alterations and some places charge a flat fee of $800, regardless of what needs to be done.

My hemming alone cost 300. I also had it taken it a significant amount and a bustle which brought me to 580

My dress needed minimal alterations as well. Cups sewn in, small take in at the bust, bustle, hem. I paid about $300- slightly over. Its just what it costs!

When I brought my dress in I was told my alterations would be no more than $360. When I picked it up yesterday she told.me $440. On top of that when I got it home and unbustled, which she did not do the way I had asked and there are very visible hooks on thr front and sides of my dress now I noticed the tulle in the back that is under the main frabic is an inch longer than the top fabric. Now I'm trying to find someone else to fix my dress and my wedding is in 27 days
