Alteration Anxiety

Kelsey, on May 21, 2015 at 3:34 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

We all have the wedding nightmares from time to time. My dress alteration appointment is in a month, and I keep having nightmares about the woman, who has been doing wedding dresses here for 30 years, is going to wreck my dress.

Anybody else dealing with the dress stress right now? lol

I haven't picked someone for my alterations yet, but I am already stressed about it. I am plus sized, but didn't get blessed with a plus sized top. I ordered my dress to fit my hips, so when I picked up my dress and tried it on, they couldn't even lace up the corset back because it was so big on top. The top will have to be taken in at least a whole size, if not more, in the bust. I am so nervous about the alterations being able to be done without looking funny, and what the cost will be. I am hoping that sewing in cups and "chicken cutlets" can help with this.

Here are some tips from someone who dose alterations, one wear the undergarments you plan to wear on your wedding day to the fitting if you are wearing a padded strapless bra day of don't wear a strapped one to your fitting they don't fit the same and for all things holy wear panties you may need professional help getting into or out of your dress and no seamstress wants to see that Two take your wedding shoes especially if you need hemming or bustling. While experience is great don't take your dress to someone you don't trust if your in a small town call around see if there is a local quilting store and talk to them or your local community or college theater or try face book

I was nervous when for my first fitting. When I went there was the same exact dress as mine that was in the back that I could see on a hanger. After my fitting I was sooo worried that she would get my dress mixed up with the dress I could see in the back room. I told her she better not get my dress mixed up and I waited and watched her label my dress and put it back in the my garment bag before I left.

She used to do the alterations for the bridal store, but was so busy and in demand branched out on her own. She has a great reputation, but I still worry lol.

Burgandy those are helpful tips, I do need a hem and a bustle. My biggest worry actually is I want to take a layer or two of tuile out. The dress I tried on laid a lot flatter than the one I ordered, it is very wild and bushy at the bottom. I'm scared she'll take it out and it'll look weird, or see through, or god knows what else!

Shannon I would do the same thing lol "Let me watch you label it or I'm not leaving"

Just wanted to share that the woman who did my alterations was WONDERFUL. She did everything I asked and thought of some really great ideas I wouldn't have thought of myself. I was a bit anxious for her to do a few things (like my hem, which was very intricate due to lace), but she executed them wonderfully. Make sure you have someone who knows what he/she is doing, and you will be fine. (:

I had alteration anxiety too! I was searching for dresses online the week before, in case she had destroyed it or something. The bottom of my dress has very elaborate ruching so I was worried she'd mess it up. It all went well Smiley smile

My only problem now is that I decided to keep my dress home (I have OCD lol) and now they won't steam it before the wedding Smiley sad I need to find a trustable place that can steam it close to my wedding day.

I have the same anxiety! But it's because I gained 5lbs since I bought the dress. I intend on losing it (though running out of time) but am having her put in a lace-up back anyway. My seamstress makes custom wedding gowns but does alterations as well. She came highly recomended by other brides. Hunt on facebook or other social media for reviews.

I've had two nightmares that involve dress alterations just this week! One where I was late to work because of the appointment and my boss was screaming at me, then last night I had one where all my teeth were falling out and I was hysterically screaming and crying and the seamstress was just going about her business. No fun!
