"All Men Marry Their Mothers"

The Bride, on August 5, 2019 at 9:26 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 29
During the latest episode of Iyanla Fix My Life, Iyanla told a wife "all men marry their mothers".

Do you agree with her statement? Why or why not?

I doubt it relates to every guy. But my personality is a bit of a blending of both his parents.
I once told him that, contrarily, he is nothing like my father (who is a woman).

I think it depends on the man. For instance, I share some similarities with FMIL, but for the most part we're different people. We still get along great, and I love her!

FH is VERY like my father. I am VERY like his mother. (He was freaked out by this when I pointed it out when we started dating. Now it's more like a joke.)

I can text FH and my dad the exact same thing (almost always a work vent or a sports thing), and get back the SAME RESPONSE. To combat that, I started a text thread with both of them in it, so I'm not getting an echo.

We are both different from those parents, as well, but there are just some moments where the similarities have me laughing so hard my ribs hurt.

    Both of us are female.
I'm like the good parts of her father and a few good and bad parts of my mom.
She is more like her mom I guess. 80% not anyone I know.
Her parents have the 1950's dynamic going on except her mom also works. My FW tried to get me to take on the role of housewife in the first few years we were together. I wasn't having it. I kept telling her I wasn't her mother and we aren't her parents and I will never have that type of relationship in my home. It took a long while but eventually got it worked out.

I most certainly hope not! My mother in law has been so mean to my sister in law because she's gay. The last week we've had the sister call us just crying every day because of his parents. My fiance says he likes because I am very much the opposite. Which in this case is a good thing.
If you have good parents I would think you would want to emulate the good parts of your mother in your own marriage and seek out a similar partner. So I suppose a lot of this depends on the relationship with your parents.

I guess there is some truth to the phrase then.

She’s been emotionally abusive to my husband for most of his life, and they haven’t been on speaking terms for over 2 years now. A lot of what I do as his wife is trying to undo the trauma that she’s caused 😣 I wish we all could have better relationships but... he needs to keep away from her for his own well being.
