Alcohol, back yard wedding & insurance?

Brittney, on July 31, 2012 at 3:29 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

My backyard wedding is going to be self catered, and with our obvious time crunch there are no available bartenders in my area. I would love to have a signature drink, wine & beer but my parents are really uncomfortable with supplying alcohol to people and then having someone get into an accident or something. They said we can just tell people it is BYOB....which sounds so terrible.

Do people that have big bbq's really have insurance? How can we get around this?

P.s. sorry if I have been so all over the place with my posts this week! We are full steam ahead with this flipped around wedding!

I think with just beer and wine, you'd be safe. Do you know your guests? Are they likely to get completely plastered? I think the issue you *might* have is with liquor, so maybe keep it to just beer and wine. And definitely not BYOB.

Everytime my FBIL hosts a large party (100 or more) with booze, he always gets insurance. He gets it through his regular insurance broker.

Thank you for the suggestions! I wonder how much that insurance is?

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BYOB! LESS PRESSURE ON YOU IM DOING THE SAME. CAUSE LORD KNOWS WE BOTH HAVE DRUNKS FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY LET THEM BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEMSELVES

Another thought...I would definitely get insurance if you are providing booze and are not providing a shuttle to the hotel. My friend attended a wedding that was out in the middle of the country with a lot of alcohol. There was no shuttle provided. One of the guests got into an accident on the way home and his wife died.

We had to get wedding insurance for our venue and it only cost about $175. We went through WedSafe. www.wedsafe.com

I would definitely have the insurance. Have your parents check with whoever does their homeowner's policy about whether alcohol liability is already covered, or if not, whether a rider could be added to cover it. You can then compare the cost with somewhere like WedSafe, referenced above.

I second what 2d Bride said as well. We were told that going through our homeowner's insurance was an option as well, but since we rent, we don't have homeowner's insurance. They should be able to have it added to their policy for the day. I think it's much better to be safe than sorry!!

I have to disagree with vanessa and go with your parents on this one. People are SUPPOSED to be responsible for themselves, but that doesn't mean that they are. Even if someone only has one or two beers and is under the legal limit but still under the influence, they can get into an accident on the way home. Not only can you be held liable for them, but if they hurt (or god forbid kill) someone else, you can be liable for that as well. Go for the insurance through wedsafe or the home owners insurance for the owner of the property (ie - if the reception is at your parents house, they will have to get the insurance under their homeowners policy). You can also see about hiring an off duty police officer for a few hours to help direct traffic around your house. The police office will be able to tell if someone is over limit and should call a taxi instead and create less liabilty for you all.

Our venue required us to have liability coverage. We used www.wedsafe.com and it was super easy and pretty affordable. Thankfully we didn't have to use the policy so I can't speak to the actual coverage, but it was nice to know that if (god forbid) one of our guests was injured, or if a centerpiece caught on fire and burned down the venue that we would be okay. Smiley smile
