Alcohol at a wedding for non-drinkers

Del, on August 30, 2016 at 8:47 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 30

My FH and I don't really drink. I don't like the taste/feeling of drunkenness, and he has a liver condition that makes it dangerous. We still want to provide booze at our wedding though, for those who will like it. For our restaurant reception, they offer an open bar package that we're just going to get for the night, and all the alcohol will be provided. However, we are planning an afterparty on a sailboat, and we need to stock the bar ourselves for that.

Can you recommend a couple of kinds of beer and a couple of kinds of wine that are likely be be crowdpleasers? We're thinking one light beer and one dark beer, one red wine and one white, plus maybe some prosecco (one of the only drinks I do like). What are some safe choices?

In terms of beer, I am a Yeungling girl, because I went to school in Trenton. FH drinks Stella Artois.

For white wine, I love Sauvignon blanc or Pinot Gris or Grigio. I don't know much about red wine and I'm Canadian so we have different beer. Good luck choosing and I applaud your being a classy host to your guests.

Atta girl! I'm not much of a drinker but FH loves beer - he even brews it with a couple of friends. I can't give you great advice on wine (pinot noir and sauvignon blanc are pretty safe) but go local for the beer. There are breweries everywhere these days so I'm sure you could find a great local one.

(I don't drink, either.) Maybe you could see if there's a local brewery or winery that's within your budget? It would be a nice, personalized touch.

For white wine, I think the best choice is Pinot Grigio (not everyone likes Chardonnay, and PG is the most versatile). For red, Cabernet Sauvignon.

Barefoot wine is a good brand and it's pretty inexpensive for how good it is. I hear they offer good multiple bottle discounts

Red wine will always be welcomed! Look for some Merlot or Cabernet which is usually well received. Im with @AL on the Yeungling or the Stella... those are my favorites too and they have a nice light flavor when cooled.

For white, I love Riesling, or Sauvignon Blanc. My choices for reds are Malbec or a blend.

New Castle or Fat Tire are pretty good Amber ale's that most beer drinkers I know like.

Applauding you for providing your guests with alcohol even though you and your FH don't drink. That is very generous of you! White wine go with a Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio. Red wine a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Pinot Noir. Those are usually the most common. Buy wine by the case, you usually get a discount.

McWilliam's Moscato is awesome (but very sweet-so it's more of a dessert wine) and Relax is great too, it's a Riesling. Everyone I've introduced it to loves it!

I'll parrot the Caverbet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir for reds. I love a Malbec, but not everyone does. Apothic has great blends that are serious crowd pleasers. I especially love Apothic Dark.

For the wines I would stick with something sweeter. For white id do a Moscato but maybe a Riesling or a Pinot grigio and probably a sweet red. I only say this because the heavier wines tend to be paired with food and I don't think people are going to want to get wine wasted

For red win you could pick a Chardonnay or a Pinot Grigio. For red wine you could go with a Merlot or a Cabernet Sauvignon. As far as brands, I would see if you could find a local winery.

If you are on a sailboat, I'm assuming it's still warm in November where you live. Stick to lighter beers if that's the case (Pilsner, lighter lager, and IPA). I love beer but heavier, fall/winter beers don't cut it for me if I'm outside in warm weather

Thank you all for the suggestions. I've made a list of the possibilities that you've mentioned and I'll discuss it all with FH. I think we have a good starting point here!

Consider going into your local grocery store (Albertsons, gelsons etc) and talk with their wine steward or liquor manager. Also Costco might be a good place to buy but less likely to get ideas.

I think for a white you'd be safest with an Italian Moscato, its very similar to Prosecco. The other I would consider is Sauvignon Blanc, its pretty popular. For red I think Pinot Noir would be your best bet. California varieties are especially good. For a light beer I think Dos Equis Lauger and I honestly would offer one that is in between. I think Blue Moon or Killians Irish Red, for a darker beer Sam Adams. Good luck!
