Airplane cake topper is done!!

Jennifer, on May 30, 2011 at 6:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I'm so happy with how it turned out! My flowers are all hydrangeas with some roses. Here's the airplane cake topper I made, along with a better picture of the banner. This will go on a 6" cake tier that will be the top of a cupcake tower with cupcakes. Around the bottom of that tier will be a ribbon with my bow.

I like a lot. Just one question; is there any way you can dress up the wire?

I love it and I think the wire looks fine (no-one expects a plane to just float over the cake).

I actually thought about a clear acrylic column or something instead of the wire, but I figured the wire really isn't a big deal. From a distance you hardly even notice it.

O..ok then it will actually be better because it will give the illusion that it is really flying.

I bought a model airplane kit. This particular one is of a Super Cub. I built the airplane as the instructions said and I didn't paint it or use any decals. I considered putting our wedding date as the tail numbers, but just ran out of time. I used a heavy gauge wire to support the plane. I wanted to do a little spiral wire thingy like I had seen online somewhere, but none of the wire I found would support the plane that way and it kept falling over. The tailwheel on this plane is actually supposed to be the front wheels, but because our plane has large tundra-type tires, I found a toy tractor and used the tires from that instead.

At one point I had found a blown-glass airplane cake topper that I absolutely loved, but it was $220. I think this ended up costing me about 20 and it got rave reviews!
