Airline upgrades?

JaQuaya , on August 29, 2014 at 7:34 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Has anyone ever been upgraded to first class just because they were on their honeymoon? Do you just casually mention this when you check in or what?

These are the little things I'm up thinking about at 5am lol

Sadly that kind of stuff doesn't happen anymore, sorry to say! Airlines upgrade their rewards members to first class if the seats are filled. Usually a couple of days before the flight, they'll try and fill the seats by allowing people to buy first class seats for a couple hundred bucks if it's important to you.

    Frequent flier here!

No, these days you can only get upgraded if you have status, or pay for it. Upgrades are cheaper at the airport if you check in with costumer service you might be able to buy one, but typically all upgrades are given to premier members a few days and hours before the flight

That is pretty much completely unlikely to happen. All upgrades are now based on flyer mile status with the airline. And it takes a lot of miles/segments to get upgrades. I fly probably 15 times a year for work and I got upgraded only twice in the last year to first class, once on a red eye flight and once on a holiday weekend when most other flyers didn't have elite status.

Airline status is such a coveted perk lol. I hate when my employer switches carriers and we have to start over.

We got upgraded on our honeymoon! We are not frequent fliers or anything. Once we were at the gate, H went up to the lady working there and started schmoozing with her. He explained it was our honeymoon and he really wanted to surprise me with a first class seat if there were any available. She made it happen! It was great. Free mimosas and breakfast and tons of leg room!

Nice to know, thanks ladies! It's not like it's a top priority or anything, just wanted to know so that we didn't make a fool out of ourselves hahaha.

It's definitely worth it to ask. The worst they can say is no.

It never hurts to ask. Our friends have been married for 6 years, and when ever they travel anywhere they pretend it's their honeymoon. They always get upgrades- on flights, hotel rooms, free champagne, private dinner, etc. We fly out in 6 days and will definitely be mentioning it everywhere we go!

FH and I often upgrade to first class. We purchase our economy tickets and will check in exactly 24 hours in advance. At check in, there's usually first class seats available for super cheap. (From Philly to Florida it's usually $45) We snatch those up all of the time. Unfortunately, we're flying Southwest and JetBlue for our honeymoon and it looks like neither airline have first class. Boo!

My aunt used to be a prominent person for a large airline as such I can give you a few tips... They will ONLY free upgrade you if you. Look worth upgrading ... For us growing up that meant dressing in Sunday best instead of jeans and a tee shirt... Me and FH plan on wearing nice but casual comfortable clothes this time b/ c we will be tired even though this Prbly means we won't be upgraded...it never hurts to mention special events but in reality it's not a guarantee and depending on where you are going you probably aren't the only honeymooners on the flight ! One more note The earlier you check in the better off your chances are it's first come first serve and don't use an electronic kiosk check in with an actual person!

My dad is a long time frequent flier. The one thing he does is he always buys people a cup of coffee. He goes to Starbucks and gets a regular coffee and goes to the counter and gives it to the person as a random act of kindness. Most of the time he will get bumped to first class. I have done it a couple times and had it work as well.
