I've seen so many opinions going back and forth on this. We are having an afternoon wedding, 1:00 ceremony and reception ending at 5:00. For multiple reasons, including the fact it's an afternoon wedding we are having a dry reception. Would alcohol still be expected at an afternoon affair? The reception is more-or-less going to be like a picnic. It's family only, maybe 60 people. The reception is going to be inside and outside (weather permitting) and I honestly just want a relaxed, fun, everyone mingling kind of afternoon. I'm already expecting there won't be much dancing and I know on my side it'll be a lot of catching up and "clucking in the hen house". Should I have immediate family members spread the word it will be dry?

Since it’s in the afternoon and it’s mostly family, I guess you could get away with not providing alcohol. Does not sound fun, though. Beer and wine would be a nice touch, if you can.

We had an 11am ceremony followed by lunch, we served alcohol. Alcohol will be expected, just serve beer and wine to keep costs down.

We had open bar at our afternoon wedding. The vibe you're going for was exactly the vibe we had for our reception. I doubt you'll get that at a dry wedding.

Spread the word it's dry for sure, but don't feel guilt about it. I live in ND, so if we went dry, they'd just get together and drink in the parking lot anyway Smiley xd. If people really need a drink to enjoy your celebration, point them to the nearest bar and tell them when to be back ;D

Unless you are LDS yes they will. Or a guest will. "I don't know of 1 person in either of our families that will be offended. And if they are, I honestly don't care." Nice to know you don't care about hosting ALL your guests.

But to your original question: Have your immediate family spread the word now. Send them out to do your dirty work. Sorry to be harsh but proper hosting means thinking of ALL your guests.

In my extended family, dry weddings are the norm. Know your crowd.

I am cutting liquor from my wedding. You don’t need to have alcohol to have fun. Some people on this site forget that the wedding is about the ceremony and exchanging vows, not about the reception and partying. I don’t see anything wrong with it. 👌🏻 I would however let people know it will be dry in advance just so they are aware.
