Advice on what to do about Videographer

Brooke, on November 10, 2016 at 12:34 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 32

My videographer was two hours late. He apologized and said he misread the time to be there. The night of my wedding he told me to expect a wedding teaser in 4-5 days. Well over two weeks later still nothing so two days ago I sent him a face book message which he read and did not reply to. Then today he messages me our teaser video and then tells me the reason it took so long was because his hard drive crashed and he lost almost all of our footage. He said he was able to recover enough for the teaser, the full ceremony, and maybe some of the reception. I was crying on the phone just devastated. He offered to shoot a couples video of us whenever we want to try to make up for it. Said it will be amazing and we'll love it. My husband wants me to tell him we just want a partial refund and be done with it. I was thinking about taking the video but I don't know if he's reliable enough. I am also really sad about losing something I will never get back. What do you all think?

Wow! I can't even imagine. So sorry you had to experience this. If I were you, I would request the teaser and any other footage he has and request half of my payment back. He was 2 hours late day of and didn't meet his promises. Take a look at the contract (please tell me you had one) and see what his promises were and contingency wording in benefit of him for this type of event. If there is none, I would point that out and request what I previously mentioned.

I definitely wouldn't trust him after all of that. Take the refund and any footage he has and get the hell away from him, that guy sounds like a major headache.

I'm so sorry about all of that, I can't imagine...

Just a heads up though, if you review him, be very careful with your wording. You can be sued for bad reviews if your wording isn't just right apparently. This article has a lot more information on it: http://offbeatbride.com/negative-vendor-reviews/

2 hours late, didn't he text you the night before. My photographer and videographer where texting me in a group msg the week of the wedding about 3 times, and the morning of saying see you Friday October 7th @3pm with my location. To avoid this...

Get your money back. I'd be so upset.

I second what everyone else has said but I would caution you to get the rest of your footage in your hands before asking for a refund. You just never know.

This is such a shame, but unfortunately technology mishaps like that do happen (of course vendors should take every precaution they can to avoid it). I would ask for at least a partial refund - he wasn't there for two hours of time you paid him for. Do you have a contract? I really hope so, take a look at what it says. Ask for all the footage he does have. It's up to you if you want to do the couples video. If he's offering it for free, I would consider taking him up on the offer... Maybe do it as an anniversary video, maybe you're able to get dressed up in formal attire for it? If not, just a sweet couples video could be nice too. If he's offering you that video but saying you have to pay for it (or offering it to you in place of a refund), I wouldn't take it since his reliability is questionable. I'm sorry you experienced this; I hope you receive some nice footage and hopefully also have lovely pictures to remember your day.

@Rachel no disrespect to you but I disagree. From a consumer's POV I wouldn't take his offer even if he told me he'd give me a full refund AND do another video for free. He has broken the trust and to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't want some re-done fake video of not my wedding day as consolation for his screw ups. He wasn't on time and his only excuse was that he mis-read a contract that he wrote and signed? You better be bleeding out the side of your neck to not show up on time when this is a one-shot deal (no pun intended). I can understand equipment malfunctioning but that sounds like an excuse to me after hearing that he was 2 hours late...doesn't sound right.

Where did you find this ass hat? Pros don't forget times to show up, or offer teasers in 4-5 days. Footage should be immediately backed up as well. What did the contract say about liability? I'd be adamant that you want the footage and a half refund. If it goes to court and the acts of God clause gets introduced, it would be hard to get awarded full refund even though you deserve it. Definitely leave reviews to protect other couples, I'm sorry this happened Smiley sad

La Grosera - Oh, I totally agree it was completely unprofessional to show up late (TWO hours late at that). No excuse for that. I also agree that nothing makes up for the wedding day. Weddings are one shot and there are no re-dos. I only meant that it can't hurt to take him up on a free couples video (nothing to lose if he does provide a refund for the wedding day and doesn't (he absolutely shouldn't) charge for the couples video, and if Brooke likes the footage she does receive). There is no making up for a broken contract on a wedding day and lack of services/products delivered, but if Brooke likes the footage she actually receives, I just thought they could use a free video in another capacity to get *something* (that something will obviously never be wedding footage). The options are either leave it all as is and ask for a refund, or ask for a refund and try to make the best out of another video possibility. It's up to Brooke and her husband what to do and if they feel like spending any more time with this person.

How heartbreaking! I'd ask for a partial refund. How did he not have data backup as someone handling priceless footage?!

I would ask for the refund and write a review. It's almost insulting that he offered you another video of a fake shoot. It was your wedding! There's no replacing that lost footage or making up for it. I get equipment breaks but my photographer told us he saves and uploads the pictures to like 7 hard drives and a cloud just in case. And showing up 2 hours early cause he misread the time? What a poor excuse. Get your money and move on.

Forget the free video of something else....salvage what you can, hope for some refund, and get this neophyte out of your life.
