Addressing envelopes including children on the outside envelope?

Marmarcat85, on February 9, 2015 at 10:30 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

I know in a formal invitation you are not supposed to include children's names on the outer envelope, but I am only sending one invitation card with one outer envelope and sending people to a website for RSVPs. How do I include children's names?

To make things easiest...I would address the outer envelopes to the Smith Family and Jack, Joan, Jill and Johnny written on the outside.

I did this. My wedding is less formal as well. I addressed them like you would the inner envelope with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smith

    Dick and Jane

Thanks! I think I will write family. These aren't super formal invitations.

We did put the children's names. This is what we did:

    Mr. and Mrs. So-and-so

    Child

    Child

    Address

I have heard horror stories of people putting "The Smith Family" on envelopes and having their guests take that term very loosely. I am most likely not having inner and outer envelopes either, so I will put what LadyMonk suggested.

I'm not doing inner envelopes either. I'm planning on using "Mr & Mrs Smith and Family". But nothing wrong with writing out the kids' names either, if you're worried about ambiguity.

What about a widower and his son...Would you write for example if their names were Mr. John Doe and Billy and you were only doing outside addressing, "Mr. Doe and Family", "The Doe Family", or "Mr. Doe and Billy"?
