Adding sleeves to my DRESS! Help.

Future Mrs. Goss, on July 19, 2016 at 10:10 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

I desperately want to add sleeves to my wedding gown, but I'm picky. I want off the shoulder lace sleeves. The problem is I have a sweetheart neckline, so I can't do the bolero. I saw a bodysuit, with sleeves at a local notified that would've been perfect since it would come out from under the dress & not over the dress. Does anyone know how I can find these type of things online or anywhere? They were 800 dollars at the boutique but I'm desperate for anything online at this point! I'll post a picture of my dress and the sleeve inspiration look I want Smiley smile

Could you talk with your seamstress about it? She may be able to modify something and make it work.

I don't really know much about dressmaking, but that's what I would do if I were you.

Have your seamstress add them during alterations. That's the only option to get that specific look. It may not be cheap, but it certainly won't cost $800.

For a full sleeve I do not think it will be much cheaper to be made custom. I have seen the body suits and they are beautiful but as you said, expensive. I'd worry about the timing of your wedding, customizations like that take a while. I'd definitely talk to a seamstress.

It might be cheaper to just buy a dress that already have sleeves if the body suit costs $800 plus probably alterations to make it work with the dress

It *might* be cheaper to do the bodysuit, (that's a BIG maybe,) but you have another issue that pp didn't address: matching the lace. Since your dress already has lace on it, sleeves with a different lace pattern will look very out of place with your dress.

Your best bet is to see if your dress shop can order some of the lace used on the dress by the yard (SOME designers will allow this, others won't) and have them make the sleeves as part of the dress alterations.

Those sleeves, from an alterations standpoint, would not be difficult to do at all, but the problem lies in finding the correct lace to make them from, and you will have to remember that since they would be an alteration, you will likely have a seam under your arms , in the armpit area, that could get scratchy/irritating through the night.

ETA: on second look, the lace on your dress looks like appliqués over tulle or organza. That might be easier, as your seamstress could try getting a few of those from the designer and making the main sleeve from matching tulle/organza. Think the design would be more along the lines of the offshoots down your skirt rather than the all over lace of the bodice. Otherwise, if you want the appliqués all over, expect it to not only be heavy, but also very, very, very expensive due to it being labor intensive.

I love your dress, mine is very similar to yours, it just lacks the bling on the neckline!

What @mna said. Try and have your seamstress make sleeves with matching appliqués.

I'm having short sleeves added to my dress. My seamstress ordered fabric and appliqués from the designer so that they will match the dress.
