Acne and Makeup

herecometheclarks, on March 14, 2017 at 3:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

Hey y'all! I have really sensitive skin. I wash my face at least once a day and try to moisturize when I remember. Other than that, I really don't do anything. It breaks out at least once a month around my period but I don't mind it too much. Lately I've been getting little breakouts around my jaw line and lower cheeks too. However, when I wear makeup (maybe once a month tops) I breakout for the next couple of days afterward. Anybody have any advice for this? Or any products that helped? I don't know if I should wear it more as my wedding gets closer because I know I'll be wearing it at the rehearsal and I don't want to be broken out the next day on my wedding. I know I've got a while but it's been bugging me lately. Thanks!

I breakout like a raging hormonal 17 year old haha. First of all, I would def recommend using an oil free moisturizer anytime you wet your face. Water dries out your skin, which makes your skin produce more oils, leading to breakouts. Also, do you use an acne cleanser?

What brand of makeup do you use? The only makeup that doesn't irritate my skin is clinique. More expensive, but it works!

Forgot to add... Clinique also makes a cover up called Acne Solutions and it has medication in it too so you can hide acne without making it worse. I live on it Smiley smile

I just use an aveeno daily face wash and the moisturizer that comes with it in a two pack haha. And I just have a random collection of drugstore makeup. Maybelline powder and neutrogena foundation I think.

I'll have to check that out! What's the difference between a facewash and an acne cleanser?

I'd get on a good skin regime ASAP! Where your breakouts are is related to hormones, stress and toxins (environmental stuff)... You cant always prevent the hormonal stuff, but the rest can be handled with a good regimen. My skin is also very sensitive and acne prone-in those same areas you mentioned and around my hairline.

My dermatologist and esthetician have me exfoliate, cleanse and moisturize daily, I also do a detoxifying serum at night and a purifying mask every few nights. If you are using a harsh exfoliant 2-3/wk is enough..

I know you want your skin to be beautiful around your wedding, but personally I want my skin to be beautiful all the time--and more importantly I want it to age well, which means starting to take care of it now.

ETA: If you are using drug store brands of makeup and skin care--make sure you know what the ingredients are doing to your skin. Some products are great others can make you situation much worse. Also-I make a point to clean my brushes/sponges at least once a week to keep old makeup/dirt/oil off my face.

Ooooo Aveeno is good stuff! Just look on the back to see if it's oil free. Not sure if there is a difference haha, but most acne cleansers I use say that it helps reduce breakouts, blackheads, etc. Usually has salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide in it!

Maybe get some bloodwork done to see if your hormone levels are normal. I had bad acne caused by a hormone imbalance... birth control pill fixed it

Do you use makeup brushes? Make sure you wash them regularly if you do.

Clinique acne solutions foundation- I've been using it forever and it's great!

I also moisturize daily with aveeno clear complexion Lotion. it's expensive but it lasts a long time and it has acne medicine in it.

@Jane sometimes using oil on your face can help. An olive oil scrub n a lil oil everyday to keep from confusing your skin to overproducing oil when you're always drying it out and washing it away. Google oil for acne. Whatever you do def start now lol wish I had been better to my skin and self years ago Smiley winking

I have sensitive skin and hormonal acne and have been using L'bri products for a few weeks and love them. My skin looks better than it has in a long time. Scrub twice a week and use a mask twice a week. Make it a habit to moisturize!! Also, drink lots of water and and look at your diet and see if there is anything that is setting your breakouts off. And make sure you are always washing your face at night after using makeup!!

I've started washing my face and reapplying makeup halfway through the day. I'll come home from work and immediately wash my face, and if I have something to do after work where I want to wear makeup, I'll reapply it. It's not a drastic change, but I have noticed that it helps.

I have the same problem you do & it doesn't matter what makeup, etc.. I've had a bunch of tests done to determine what causes it & nothing was found to be wrong. So, I now use Raw African Black Soap to wash my face & I do so when I wake up & before I go to bed. It's amazing! I also use tea tree oil for breakout. However, please be aware that you have to dilute it in a carrier oil! You can not apply it full strength. You have to put just a few drops in at least a few ounces of another oil like grape seed oil or almond oil. These are all essential oils too don't use the grocery store grapeseed oil. Retinol creams also help but, I use one only once a week. Those things have helped tremendously. Make sure to wash your makeup brushes after every makeup application as well! ETA - I also do a clay mask once a week.

Thanks so much y'all! I definitely need to get better about drinking water and I've eaten more carbs in the last few days than I usually do.

Lots of small things other than what you use on your face can make a huge difference. Besides drinking water, wash your pillowcase at least once a week, braid your hair before you go to bed (to keep it away from your face), clean your phone regularly, and get plenty of sleep. Also, check the expiration date on your makeup. I only use mine for spot coverage, and it usually goes bad before I use it all. Wash your makeup brushes regularly and never go to bed with makeup on. I have a tendency to rest my chin in my palm at work (along my jawline) and that's also a big no-no. Stress can play a huge role in acne, too, so manage your stress through exercise, meditation, prayer, hot bubble bath, whatever works for you!

How old is your makeup? If it's been more than 6 months to a year, that could also be contributing to the breakouts.

Dermatologist visit ASAP. I had cystic acne when I was 20 and it was out of the blue. My diet was the cleanest it has been and my make up was brand new. It started small and within 2 months my skin was out of control and painful. You may need antibiotics.

I swear by neutrogena soap, the pink one. Vitamin c toner and Bio oil. You need to wash twice a day. Before bed is the most important.

Go to the doctor and good luck!

I use to break out around my period. Since I started using this it has stopped to only 1 zit if any. For make up have you tried a paraben free line of makeup?
