About the ushers...where in the heck do they go after they seat people?!

FutureRice0821, on January 15, 2015 at 9:29 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 10

So, I have two ushers, but I hadn't given any thought to where they go after they seat the mothers, usher people in, etc. Do they stand up at the front? Do they sit back down? We have 2 groomsmen, but neither one of them are ushers and then we have the ushers, but I guess I just assumed they sit the mothers and then seat themselves? What's the norm?

Yes, they just seat the mothers then seat themselves if they aren't groomsmen.

ETA: assuming the mothers are seated during the processional line right before the wedding part enters.

They usually walk back to the lobby or greeting area to mingle. As guest approach the ceremony speech, they extend an elbow to the lady and take her to a seat while her gentleman escort follows.

If they aren't the groomsmen, then usually they sit in a place of honor closer to the front. I feel that nobody should ever sit in front of Mama (and mine wouldn't let that happen!). Our GM are pulling double duty, but had they not I would have sat the first row as parents/grandparents, second as bridesmaids and either put the ushers in the same row OR in the row behind them

I also have 2 ushers and after they seat the mothers, they go off to the side and wait until the groomsmen, groom, bridesmaids, flower girls, ring bearers come down the aisle and then just before the bride come, they will roll out the aisle runner until the end of the aisle. After that they usually sit in the back so they won't distract the ceremony, but they can go and sit wherever they want.

If you have the ushers sit at the back, they can intercept any late arrivals and hold them in place until there is a pause and they can be seated.

I actually had not thought about this. In the mass chaos of my life with Dad, this was not on the radar. I want my brothers to be ushers, even if they won't wear tuxedos. Ugh one more thing I need to think through.

We have our brother's being ushers so we will make sure when they are sitting people they will leave room for themselves on the ends of one of the first two rows so they can sneak to their seats just before it all gets started.

They will be seating with family (probably on the end) and they can take their seats shortly after the ceremony starts.

Thanks ladies! This helps out for sure.

@Sarah, I hear you! With everything going on, I didn't even think about ushers at all. It wasn't until the Tux rental lady said, "What about the ushers? What colors do you want them in?" I was like, um...ushers, oops, guess I should have some! ha ha

They sit with the rest of the guests. Most of my ushers are also groomsmen....

Our usher is a groomsman so after he escorts the parents in, he will be going back to the lobby to wait for his entrance with one of the bridesmaids.
