88 days away and need my gallbladder removed

Lauren, on March 3, 2020 at 8:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
My bachelorette is in 17 days. First dress fitting April 11th. I'm in grad school and lots going on at work right now. AND now I have gall stones and need my gallbladder removed 😩 I have no idea when to schedule this and don't want to risk being in pain on our honeymoon by waiting until after. what great timing. Anyone ever have this lacroscopic procedure done? What was recovery like?

My mom had hers removed and it took her almost a week to heal and get back to work. She said it took longer than she expected but the doctor told her about a week. Idk if that is the norm or just just what she experienced. Age may be a favor as well. You may have to take some time off work.

I have not had this procedure, but I don’t think the recovery is too extensive. I would def schedule it asap. You don’t want to end up in a more complicated emergency surgery, with longer recovery. Better take care of it now and be fully recovered for the wedding. I’d rather take it easy at my bachelorette than my wedding.

Mine weren't gallbladder related, but I've had two laparoscopic abdominal surgeries (both for gynecological issues). For each, I was back at work within a week and feeling pretty "normal" within a couple weeks. My biggest issues were that I'm pretty sensitive to general anesthesia, so that had a bigger impact on me than either surgery. If you can fit it in with work & school, maybe immediately after the bachelorette? Generally, to do abdominal laparoscopic surgery, they pump in carbon dioxide gas to provide room for the instruments between the organs, but that dissipates within a day or two, so I wouldn't be too worried about your fitting in April. I'd talk with your doctor about the pros and cons related to scheduling surgery. Clearly, you want to do what you can to prevent major issues around the time of the wedding. Good luck!

It depends on your age and health - but the recovery is usually quick. My sister had problems after because she didn’t take the medication. Talk to your doctor about timing.

Thank you everyone! I'm calling the doctor in the morning to ask my questions and schedule it. But it helps having some of your experiences to ease my worries!

It's fairly quick and easy. Couldn't lift or move heavy things I think 4 weeks. I took off work I think a week, maybe 2, then was on restrictions for a bit. That was 2011, so I was 21 I think...I'd just get it over with. Take time to heal and keep trekking

I had a lacroscopic hysterectomy for my 30th birthday and had a very similar experience. The post surgery exhaustion hit me way harder than any pain. It took me about 1.5 weeks to get back to normal. I took a couple days off, and worked half days for the next week.

I had this done more than 20 years ago, but I don't think it's changed much. It's an outpatient procedure, so that's good, as you're back home the same day. But afterwards, my whole belly/torso area felt like I was beaten with a baseball bat! Ouch! But seriously, every day got better and better. It's really just a matter of the muscles in that area are really sore from the trauma of surgery. But this method leaves only a couple of tiny little "wounds" that healed very quickly. If you can get it done soon, you'll be better off. I had about 4 days of recovery time, and I'm a big baby when it comes to pain. So, if you can schedule it immediately, you could have it done, and be all recovered by the time your bachelorette comes around. The laproscopic procedure makes it a lot better than it used to be!
