75% of dresses are strapless. But I want straps!

LuckiestGirl, on March 2, 2014 at 11:59 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 37

Maggie Sottero's Ascher was the last of 15 dresses that I tried on today and I INSTANTLY fell in love. I didn't jump the gun, though. It's strapless, and I want straps! I think they flatter me more. Do you girls think that detailed, lace straps could be added on properly, and look pretty? They wouldn't be too thick.

I am not sure if this will be the dress I end up purchasing, but I would still like to know for future reference. Thank you in advance, ladies!

I think most dresses can have a simple strap added. And I think that would look fine Smiley smile are you worried about constantly adjusting a strapless? Or do you more like having something there for how it looks?

They say they can definitely do it. The straps would be added on with extra fabric left over from the alternations. However, my concern is that the straps actually look like they belong on the dress, not like they are add-ons.

Straps can be added to any dress very easily. They might not be "supportive" straps, but straps nonetheless.

@Andrea - I like support (I have 34Ds), but this dress does a great job of keepin' the girls in already! So it'd pretty much be just for looks.

Straps should look just fine! I'm having dainty lace cap sleeves added to my dress and DB only charges $39 for them. Im tired of the strapless trend and I'm excited to have something different.

Yes, you are absolutely right @Ashley. I will definitely take your advice and have them order extra fabric!

It definitely can be done, you just need to find a seamstress that can source good lace (a lot comes from france), and has experience working with lace. When the lace is joined, or if edging needs to be created they actually have to cut out all the little appliques to join it seamlessly, very tedious which can be costly, and requires a lot of detail and skill. I am working with a custom wedding dress maker right now on designing my dress so have been learning a lot on this topic!

I suggest you find a dressmaker in your area that has experience in lace and ask their opinion/get a quote, they will be able to give you a few options Smiley smile

Straps should be easy to add, I however want SLEEVES! I am a bigger girl and was taught to cover myself up a bit. I am looking using a bolero under the dress I looked at to get a sleeved effect. Will have to check with my seamstress (cousins MIL) and see what she thinks.

All the examples you are showing have plunging backs and the dress in your OP does not so not sure if that would actually work. I am over the strapless trend too. My dress is Essense of Australia D1291 if you want to look at how my dress does. (On my phone sorry).

Have you tried any dresses like the one you posted a picture of? It's an essence of Australia dress, I am familiar because I choose a EOA and it has straps, however I will be having the straps altered a little bit. Since you haven't chosen yet I would try on some more to be sure, you have plenty of time.

@Gamecox - Yeah, unfortunately I am drawn to dresses with plunging backs. Is be willing to get past that, however, if I at least had the straps. Great dress!

@Moria - I actually tried that dress on right before the Ascher and it was a close contender! I am considering trying it on again on my next visit.

That dress looks beautiful on you! I think if it's done right and you have enough fabric that you can achieve the look you want. The example photo you posted is beautiful too. Do you not like that dress?? Ultimately, your seamstress will have to tell you if she can do what you're asking. Show them pictures of what you want so they know exactly what you're asking for. Good luck!

The dress is gorge!! BUT, unfortunately I do think it would look like the straps were an after thought Smiley sad at least IMHO. The corset back is never really paired with sleeves or straps and I dont think it would go? I would definitely have them borrow removable straps from another dress and mock it for you to get a better idea, bc i could be wrong!

Thanks, Luckiest Girl! I love all the Essense of Australia love on this thread! Not too many of us have one of their dresses, unlike Maggie Sottero.

I think that a seamstress that knows what they are doing will have no problem adding straps. That is an amazing dress by the way and you look stunning in it!
