40 x 40 room seating help

megan, on November 26, 2012 at 9:41 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

We have a 40 x 40 reception hall and about 110 guests....do you recommend round or rectangular tables? Do you think it will be enough space?

I have limited space so I'm doing rectangle tables for optimal seating.. I don't know the dimensions of my venue but I'm having 120 ish people and found its much cheaper and easier for me to do the long rectangular tables...

    good luck <3

What did the hall suggest? They know the layout of the room the best and what works. What size tables does the hall provide?

Also, what did you plan on having in the space? Only tables, or the dance floor, the gift table, the cake table...?

In any case it sounds a little tight to me. We had 45 guests, round tables, dance floor, DJ, and cake table. The room was 46 x 24 and we had a little elbow room, but not a whole lot.

They provide most of the 6 ft round-- we would have to rent some more--- the place actually doesn't do many receptions so they didn't have many suggestions

That is tight. I'd do long rectangular ones.

They must have maximum occupancy at least?

Have you played with a floor plan? Are you having a buffet? Is there certain areas that are certain (DJ, Buffet, dance floor, etc) Fill in the known and see what you can get to fit. Rectangles are the best bet for small spaces at max capacity.

It is a little on the tight side, but completely doable. Rectangular tables are more space efficient and the larger your tables the better. If you can get 8 foot rectangular tables instead of 6 foot tables that would be great. The other option if you have 6 foot tables (we do) would be to put them together (end to end) to create long banquet tables that seat 12 (or even more). If you go with round tables, you are better off with larger ones that seat 8 or 10 people.

I agree with Haley. Definitely play around with the seating chart feature. It really helps with figuring out how everything fits.

If the hall doesn't know, ask the table rental company that they use the most.

An 8 ft long will fit 8 people on each side? Thank you so much for the feed back. We checked out the seating helper site and round just doesn't look possible--- but rectangular may still work

No an 8' long will fit 4 on each side and you can put one at each end if you have to.

Putting 10 people at an 8' table means 6 of them will be bumping their knees on the table legs. To be comfortable, put 3 on each side and no one at the ends. Unless you're really cramped for room.

I had about 90 people, and 30x40 patio to use as a dining area. Luckily we had other spaces for dancing, buffet lines, bar, etc...

But, I found that the best option to fit everyone on the patio was to do "family style" seating. We had 6ft rectangular tables and we put 5 tables end to end and created 3 long lines of tables. We sat 3 people per side of the 6ft tables, and no one at the ends, as they were up against other tables. So we could sit 38 people per line of tables, and could fit 108 people total.

    Hope that helps!
