3 tier cake vs. smaller 2 tier with sheet cakes

Alexis, on May 27, 2015 at 8:28 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Hopefully this will break up a bit of the spam!

So we are going grocery store route on cake. We have desserts with our catering, so having the wedding cake is just something I really want, but we don't want to spend a crazy amount. I guess I just want opinions or advice on whether people think it is kind of tacky to do the sheet cake in back route? I really love the look of the 3 tier and its not much of a price difference than just doing a 2 tier and a couple sheet cakes. Should I just go for the three tier I love?

Yea its literally not that much a difference its probably like yours. Plus I know with food and desserts and the platters refreshed all night, nit everyone will eat the cake and I even plan to put out cute little cake bags if people want to take some home. i'm honestly not too worried about some going to waste, I just really want to have a wedding cake haha.

We are doing the 4 tier, the price difference wasn't all that different anyways, (our baker is fairly new so we got a good deal).

ETA: I didn't answer your question.

If the price difference isn't a big deal then go with the 3 tier if you like that more.

If the pricing isn't a big deal, go with the one that you like.

When we used to do this, as caterers, we'd order a sheet cake with TWO LAYERS of filling, so it looked like the wedding cake. Mostly we did it when our couples didn't like the look of an enormous cake..

If the price doesn't matter then whatever you like! I was at a wedding in November, they had a small cake that they cut, then they had sheet cakes in back that was cut and they served the sheet cake. People didn't even really notice they wren't eating the wedding cake, then the bride and groom got to keep it which was nice for them.

We had a smaller three tier cake, plus a sheet cake "in the back" and really, except for the lack fondant, no one can tell the difference. Tiered cakes are usually brought back to the kitchen for cutting anyway, so its not like ppl are watching the cake get cut, and can see when its no longer the tiered cake.

Sheet cake comes with our meal, like your dessets. So, we are just doing a mini cake (from a grocery store) so we can "cut the cake"..but we are on a very tight budget. If budget isnt an issue, why are you even giving it a 2nd thought? Just go for the cake you want..but know that most people will choose the dessets over your cake..and your going to have a ton left over. Personally, in your situation, I would probably just buy the 2 tier wedding cake and skip the sheet cake since there are also dessets, and save a few bucks.

If price doesnt matter then I would do what you think would be best. I had thought of doing the 2-tier and sheet cake as well but with the amount of people I have I may need more than a 3 tiered cake.

If there isn't much difference in the price, do the one you like.

We're doing a 3 tiered cake with a kitchen (sheet) cake.

If the difference is minimal, I would do the 3 tier just for photos.
