3 days to go and have lost my voice

Natalie, on May 31, 2017 at 1:54 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Adding up the pros and cons of having a winter wedidng, I hadn't even considered the idea of being more likely to get sick. So here I am three days to go, no voice and a horrid cough, anyone have some good quick remedies?

Definitely go see a professional! I've lost my voice before and it took 14 days to recover! My mom lost her voice and went to see a doctor. She was better in a few days

Oh no! Hot tea with honey, or hot lemon and honey, and avoid milk products if possible. Stay hydrated, avoid talking at work (that's a hard one, I know). Text or email when possible to give you a break.

I will be today. Some home remedies can be just as good though.

Warm water with lemon juice can work but a dr could probably give you something stronger.

Only talk when you need to!

Airborne or emergency C will help give your immune system a boost to fight whatever it is. I've been drinking it just to help not get sick

Don't stress about it! Usually laryngitis is just that, not a cold. If you don't talk at all for the next few days or talk very little, you should be able to talk (with pain) by the wedding. Luckily the wedding shouldn't require you to talk loudly too much (other than saying I do or your vows).

If it's not a cold, just laryngitis, rest up and drink honey like it's water before you have to speak.

I second @EngineerInLove. My mom and MOH did these remedies and they worked like a charm.

If you've lost your voice, don't try to talk and definitely do not try to whisper! It's harder on your vocal cords than speaking, and pushing your voice while you have laryngitis can cause nodes (calluses) to develop on your vocal cords.

For the cough, have you been to the doctor? If it's dry, there are some prescriptions than can calm the urge to cough. If it's not, try Mucinex to loosen everything up, sit in a steamy room, and cough it out!

I was coming to say what MrsSki said about whispering. I lost my voice a few months in to my first year as a teacher. I thought if I whispered I could go to work and teach as normal. Nope. Turns out that instead of losing my voice for a few days, I caused my voice to be gone for a month due to the strain from whispering. I wish you the best.

ThroatCoat tea helps so much! My choir director always has it with him.

    Tea and honey

    Apple cider vinegar

    Salt water gargle

    Cough drops

    Expectorant during the day (mucinex)

    Suppressant night time (delsym, robitussin)

Do not talk unless you absolutely have to.

    Feel better!

    COMPLETE VOCAL REST.

Do not whisper--it strains your vocal folds more and makes it take longer to recover.
