20s themed wedding in 2020?

Alexis, on June 2, 2018 at 4:48 PM Posted in Planning 0 21
My wedding is 2/29/20. I know it's already on an odd date, but why not make it even more unique by having a 20s theme since it's 2020? I'm doing decor and accents and invitations in art deco style, but would I be pushing it if I added to my invites a little card hinting at a dress code? Something along the lines of "The wedding party will be dressed in 1920s attire, feel free come as you are, but you're more than welcome dress up with us for this special occasion!" I know I have time, so I'll tweak the wording if I choose to invite the guests dress up with us, but I don't want to come off as rude for asking my guests to join in on the theme. Any opinions on the matter? Anyome else been to a wedding where the guests dressed up? Or thinking of doing the same? Thanks in advance!

I adore dressing up, so I think it would be super fun! I went to a friend's vow renewal and they did a 30s Bonnie and Clyde theme. They invited guests to dress up if they wanted and had a photo booth. I'd say it was a 50/50 split on those who dressed up versus those that didn't. I don't think anyone would be upset if you invited them to join in. It's not like you're making it a requirement! I think it's a fun idea!

I wouldn't. No matter how nicely worded and even including the option to not dress up, the message will be perceived as you wanting them in costume.

Exactly. I don't want to require it, but I'd like guests to join in if they want! My FH actually gave me the idea when we were looking at invites, all the ones he liked were art deco styled and when I realized it a light bulb went off. Haha.

That's what I'm worried about. But it's a small wedding (only 100-ish people) and it's mostly family and really close friends so I would think they would be okay. But I get what you're saying. That's why I'm sort of on the fence about the issue. Thanks!!

I think that's awesome. We are doing an 1800s Victorian theme and would love if our guests wanted to dress up. That's such a cool idea

We had some guests dress up at ours. We just included a section on our website with suggested attire and mentioned that people could feel free to wear theme appropriate costumes if they wished.

"The dress code suggested is afternoon tea attire in Wonderland- wear your gowns, and tuxes with tails if you like, but sundresses and khakis are welcome, too. If it tickles your fancy to wear something theme appropriate like a costume, please feel free!"

That's a good idea. I'll probably do that instead of including a separate card with the invitations and rsvps.

Love your theme! Very clever and fun.

We did an early 60's themed reception for 50 guests and required a dress code. Only 1 person decided not to come based on that. Everyone else had a blast and the photos of guests were sooo cute. It's pretty easy to at least accessorize with a tie or costume jewelry (and hairstyle). It may be a good idea to put photos and links to accessories on your wedding website to help guests.

Here's how we worded our invite if you want to borrow anything...

I love this idea. I am sure if you put it as an option on the invitations or your wedding website people would totally do it! I kinda wish now we did a theme!

Omg, I love it! But, I love dressing up.

I wish I would have told my guests to dress up. Or, at least wear a hat or something.

Love your ideas and LOVE dressing up but I would suggest definitely making it sound very much optional bc people either love it or hate it and you just dont want anyone feel uncomfortable!

My dress code is identical to that of the Royal Wedding: Morning dress. Because my fiance is British.

You'll find people love to dress up more often than not. This seems like a really fun themed wedding.

Hi Alexis! I totally agree with Vanessasaurus. I think that's a really fun way to incorporate your theme, inviting people to join in on the occasion, while expressing that it is optional.

What's your venue like? Smiley smile How are you planning to execute the 1920s feel into your venue and decor?

Our venue is lots of white with gold and sequin decorations, so that's pretty glam. I don't want to over due the theme, and since the venue already has gold centerpieces, I may add some large feathers into the mix and put into some other places hear and there. My invitations will have that art deco/20's or 30's style to them. My DJ also has an option to use his photo booth, and I hoping he has some fun 20's theme photo props to go along with it, if not I'll just buy some from amazon or somewhere. We're having the ceremony at the same place as the reception, and the venue is on the lake. They have string lights hung up over the lawn, but I plan on doing a moon and stars string back drop for the ceremony and leaving it up for the dance area during the reception. My bridesmaids will have gold sequin dresses (I'll add a picture for reference) and I have a dress in mind that I think has that vintage feel to it. I'm thinking of making some sequin headbands with feathers in them, but I'm feeling like that'll be too much and the ones I have in mind are pretty cheap looking (like something I'd make for my daughter's birthday party for favors). So far that's all I've got.

I also did feathers. I loved it and couldn't get enough of the look. So we're doing our anniversary party the same. I love your center pieces.

Oh my gosh, Alexis, I LOVE every detail you just shared.

Totally cohesive & glamorous & perfectly tasteful. I love your idea with feathers and the invitations and decor.

The bridesmaids dresses sound great too, will they be in mismatched shades of gold sequins like this photograph?

The dress you have in mind is also stunning. Which color are you considering?

Again, totally love your vision and definitely go for it! Smiley heart

Thanks! Yeah, they have the choice of whichever gold sequin dress they'd like, I want them to show me what they're ordering before they actually buy it, so that I can make sure no one is matching and that it's not getting to far from the idea I want (I really want everyone to not match). And we live in New Orleans so there's lots of Mardi gras halls and places they can wear them to. On my dress I'm actually on the fence between the ivory and the ivory/rose. But I'll probably do the rose if I'm being honest.

Thanks! I know! I want going to do center pieces since the venue has their all inclusive package that includes the center pieces and decor, but since picking the theme I definitely want to do about half the tables with feathers just to get the feel (plus I love the look!) I actually just stumbled upon feather bouquets ( looks like a feather fan wrapped at the bottom with rhinestones on it). And my bridesmaids love that idea just cause we can make it our selves pretty easily.
