2 Caterers

Tina, on June 6, 2016 at 9:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Since my FI and I and our families have different cultures, we were planning on having 2 different caterers to cater our wedding. One caterer would be American cuisine with options like steak, chicken, and fish. The second caterer would be Asian with options like sushi, Vietnamese spring rolls, other Viet food.

We think it would definitely be easier to have a buffet. Therefore people can choose whatever they would like.

Does anyone have any experience with 2 caterers?

I like the idea of buffet! However would you have to pay a fee per head for both? Like $20 X 100 people to American caterer and $20 X 100 to Asian caterer? Could you find a caterer that does any cuisine that can make Asian and American options so you don't have to pay double?

My biggest advice would talk with both caterers about your plans. They may not be willing/able to work with another caterer due to health codes.

One caterer would be a full service caterer while the second one would be a drop off catering. I have already spoken to a few full service caterers. Some were not willing to work with another caterer while others were open to it!

I think that idea is even a worse idea. Having one caterer drop off their food for you to maintain only opens you to the liability if someone gets sick from improperly kept food, and I can almost promise your other full service caterer isn't going to take responsibility of keeping and serving the food, on the chance that it could make guests sick, and suddenly they're on the line liability-wise for another caterer's problems.

If you're going to do this, be upfront with both caterers, do both as full service caterers, and let them handle the food 100%. Or make sure you take out a BIG liability insurance policy for your wedding in case guests get sick from improperly kept food.

Having a caterer drop off food and leave, leaving you to set it up to keep it hot/cold is almost as bad as self-catering.

I have actually talked to one caterer that were willing to take responsibility for the food. They would serve and maintain everything. Apparently they have worked with the second caterer in the past. But I agree, otherwise it would be a huge headache!

If you've got a caterer willing to take on this responsibility, and you can get that in writing in your contract, then I think this all sounds delicious. Make sure that liability is clearly spelled out though; don't leave any loopholes.

Another possibility is doing one kind of cuisine for your RD and another for your reception.

Are food trucks an option where you live? I was just at a wedding that two--Latin and Irish. The food was incredible and we got to try whatever we wanted!

@l_cre8 that sounds like an awesome wedding! I'll have to look into that. Maybe even for an after dinner snack (to break up all the alcohol being consumed haha).
