100% up front for dress? What was your salon's payment plan?

The "best" salon in my city has been there for several decades and is large and successful. It has hundreds of rave reviews. But when I talked to them about ordering a dress, they told me it would be 100% payment up front, that they couldn't order it for me until I had paid the dress price plus shipping cost in full. They also said the designer "wouldn't let them" budge on price.

Is this unusual? Several other salons have wanted 50% down, 50% on delivery, and I kno some of you bargained your dress price down. I'm concerned this need for 100% up front may mean something is hinky at this place - but it's been there for ages and everyone says it's the best!

I paid 50% upfront and when I got the dress paid the other 50%. But it seems that based on what everyone else is saying, you're fine!

Mine was also 50% at purchase time then the balance has to be paid before they begin alterations (or at pick up if you are having your alterations done somewhere else).

I wouldn't like to pay 100% up front, if there was a problem with it you wouldn't have any leverage. We haven't paid 100% for anything for the wedding until we collected. Well, except for the suppliers we have paid deposits but are choosing to pay most the day before (except for the venue/ catering as it's a hotel, we will pay on checkout)

I had to put 75% down to order my gown, and 100% when I picked it up.

55% down, but we paid the full amount. 15% discount because I purchased it at trunk show. The salon is offering 10% off on accessories, and 15 off bridesmaids dresses for purchasing with them. Alterations were quoted $300-$600.

I had the option of half down. We are now making gradual payments to the dress.

My parents bought my dress and wanted to pay the full amount right away to get it finished. I think the policy was 50 or 70% up front and the balance at pick up. I understand why a shop would want full payment first - the dress is being made to your measurements and will be harder to sell/impossible if you flake.

Mine was half down and the rest to take it home. Had the salon not been closing, I think it would've been different.

My salon had an option to do 50% that day and 50% in 30 days (this is a salon where the dresses are off-the-rack, not ordered). We paid 100% up-front and they gave us $50 off the veil for doing so and some free earrings. I think your salon sounds pretty normal.

At least 50% down and the rest on pick up. My salon also price matched the dress I bought to an online company that carried my dress.

Ok, thanks everybody! I feel better about it now. Still have to decide on a dress...but at least I can be more comfortable ordering it.

Ours was 50/50, one payment when ordered, last when the dress arrives.
