1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Soon2BMrsB, on September 6, 2016 at 8:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

Our officiant just sent us a draft of different options for our ceremony. In the readings, one option is 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. I love this reading but don't really carry much religious belief myself, nor does my FH (although we both have family who do). Is it wrong to include it? Is it way way overused? Are you including it?

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.

I think it's a good scripture that can be used in a non-religious ceremony, but it's definitely overused. If your officiant can find an alternative, I think that would be better.

I'm not religious at all but it's important to my FH to include this. There are quite a few versions, it took him a couple of days to find the one that he liked best. I really like this abbreviated version you chose.

This one is pretty much perfect which is why it is used so much for weddings! If you love it, use it. This is a passage meant to express your thoughts and feelings in YOUR wedding. The people there with you will be those who love and respect you so they should either like or respect your choices. Choose what you love, don't worry about it and enjoy your day!

@Keri M, my officiant did provide 1 alternative but I really don't like it. It just doesn't feel like us. I'm sure I could research and find an alternative, but this is still one of my favourites.

That's the tough part! It's so common but the words seem so true.

I don't think it's wrong to include it; you don't need to be religious to find the words meaningful or beautiful. I do think it's overused though.

Try this; it's a modern version.

    Guest Reading of Scripture

The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians has been read at weddings for centuries. Guest will be reading a modern interpretation.

Love is a mighty power, a great and complete good.

Love alone lightens every burden, and makes rough places smooth.

It bears every hardship as though it were nothing, and renders all bitterness sweet and acceptable. Nothing is sweeter than love,Nothing stronger,

    Nothing higher,Nothing wider,Nothing more pleasant,

Nothing fuller or better in heaven or earth; for love is born of God.

Love flies, runs and leaps for joy.It is free and unrestrained.Love knows no limits, but ardently transcends all bounds.Love feels no burden, takes no account of toil, attempts things beyond its strength.

Love sees nothing as impossible, for it feels able to achieve all things. It is strange and effective, while those who lack love faint and fail. Love is not fickle and sentimental, nor is it intent on vanities.Like a living flame and a burning torch,it surges upward and surely surmounts every obstacle. Love endures.

Neither of us are religious, but I love that reading. The meaning is far more important to me than whether it comes from a religious text - because sentiment is timeless, and it's so clearly and simply expressed, it's meaningful to me. Now, if it was paired with a religious sentiment or blessing, I'd say no. But on its own, if that's how you feel about love and your future together? Go for it.

    Another modern version:

Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, love does not boast.

Love is not proud, love is not rude. Love always trusts, love always hopes.

    Love never fails.

I absolutely love that one...it's beautiful---however, it is way overused. We are very religious and specifically didn't choose that verse because of how much it is overused.

I can't help but chuckle when I hear this scripture because of the movie Wedding Crashers when they make fun of how over used it is.

BUT, it is overused because it applies so well, so if you don't care that everyone has already heard it and heard it at probably at least 60% of the weddings they have been to, then do it. If you're on the fence, I love Celia's suggestion!

Our officiant is saying this during the welcome address:

As family and friends, you are the ones who taught FH and LoveInDC that, in the final accounting, love is what life is all about. You have shown them that love is patient and that love is kind; that love is selfless, always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. You have taught LoveInDC and FH how to love, and you have shown them the wonders that come through loving one another. We are here today to see them off on this wonderful journey called marriage. Let us also be there to see them through.

One of my couples specifically asked for it.

Before the ceremony started, one of the groomsmen said, "I hope I don't hear Love is... again."

I told him that he would be hearing it -- at the couple's request!
