Is it really necessary to have an engagement party? FH and our parents think we should have an engagement party in the spring (after the holidays and things begin to slow down event wise) our wedding is over 2 years away and we're only inviting 50...

Anyone else having a long engagement? 2years what have you planned so far? if nothing yet, how long until you start planning? My wedding is October 2018 but i've pretty much done everything except buy a dress...too soon?
