We met in my second semester of college at a dance hosted by our school. Since we attend college in Wyoming, swing dancing is pretty much a must-know if you want to survive. Therefore, 90% of the songs played at these college-hosted dances are Country. During one of these songs, he approached and asked if I wanted to dance. I, the poor, clueless girl from Seattle who didn't have half an idea of how to swing dance, apologetically explained just that. As it turned out, he was the president of the college's dance club and just so happened to help out with the school's dance class by teaching swing dancing and tango. So he took me by the hand and, amid lots of toe smashing and general misstepping, taught me a few basic swing moves that ought to at least help me survive the song. Once it was over, we thanked each other for the dance and moved on. Later that evening we ended up talking again thanks to a group of mutual friends. We bonded over a dance I invented while trying to clean up a smashed lollipop on the floor ("The Sweep") and a jokingly sexist comment that would have made me throw a PC hissy fit a year before. Luckily for him, college had destroyed the sensitivity that I had cultivated by growing up in the Pacific Northwest. We continued chatting throughout the night and discovered that we both had a love for our belly flub.
