History
John William "JW" Hornsby, born in 1888 in Seaford, York County, left school after the 8th grade to work as a waterman, eventually becoming a successful businessman with his buy boat "Marion-J" and later as an Amoco Oil distributor. In 1933, he built the Hornsby House, a colonial-style home designed by William Graves Perry, which became a center for southern hospitality. His daughter, Marian, married Bill Bowditch in 1943, and they raised their four sons in the house after JW's death in 1956. Marian wrote the "From the Kitchen at Hornsby House" cookbook, capturing family recipes. Today, the house, filled with antiques collected by JW's wife Georgiana, operates as the Hornsby House Inn, run and owned by Marian's son David and the general manager Tom, offering traditional southern hospitality to guests from around the globe.
