I found an old electric Skilsaw in my father’s barn when I was 10 years old. A few days prior, I had watched a TV show where they built custom doghouses and other unique things. Having watched these professionals build amazing works of art, I felt that I knew what I was doing. When my dad was away at work, I made my way out to the family barn and began cutting scrap wood with the old Skilsaw I had found. By the end of the summer, I built a cart to carry yard tools to help with my chores. This experience gave my life a whole new momentum and uncovered my creative side. I also realized that I loved creating with my hands. This love led to me beginning with an AA in Mechanical Engineering in college and ultimately graduating with a BS in Digital Media Production. Although the beginning and end majors of my college career are very different, the one thing that was always constant was my desire for creative design and problem-solving. Changing my college major and taking my creativity to a more digital presence allowed me to continue to find fulfillment in my hands-on approach at life. This change still engaged my creative side, but without the same fiscal and physical constraints. Although I am not working as the engineer I imagined as a young boy, I am still drawing on the traits I learned from picking up the Skilsaw. Today, I consider myself a digital craftsman. I enjoy identifying a problem and finding the appropriate solution. The joy that I experienced with the Skilsaw was the seed for my independence, creativity, and problem-solving that has created who I am today.
