History
This building was originally constructed in the early 1870s. At the time, Duluth was still referred to as Howell's Crossing. The farmhouse received a placard in 1873, the same year that the town was rebranded with the name Duluth. Joseph Moor purchased the property in 1904. Emma Moor, Joseph's daughter, married a man named Lee Payne, building a house next to the original structure. Lee raised his children on the land, the youngest of which, Frances, married Minor Corley. The happy couple lived out their days on the estate until Frances' passing. In the following years, Minor Corley remarried his childhood friend Winnie Guthrie Cain, who went on to maintain the property until its selling to Betsy Corley, Frances and Minor's daughter. Betsy and five of her friends bought the farmhouse, naming it the Payne-Corley House. Nowadays, the venue is maintained by Krista Summerour Ganley, a daughter of one of the five friends of Betsy, and her husband, Michael. Since then, they have been helping beautiful celebrations take place at the historic landmark.
